Weird/messed up character when starting linux?
I'm using Arch Linux if it matters, I installed steam and got it working but...well just look.

mmm i think something like that happend on wine 1.5 ... have you tried deleting your ./local/share/steam ? ( make sure to move the steamapps folder to another place )
