Trouble installing steam on Ubuntu...
...by a Ubuntu noob; this is my first time even touching it. :P essentially, my problem is that when I try to install the file, I see the error "dependency is not satisfiable- jockey-common" . I've looked around and saw a bunch of similar problems but none quite exactly like this. Any ideas? Sorry if this is a really simple question or out of place...

Try to: sudo apt-get install jockey-common in a console and that should fix the problem

Hmm, now the last line says " E: Unable to locate package jocket-common ". At least this seems to be going somewhere though :)

The best version of Ubuntu to use with Steam is 12.04.1 32-bit (i386). 12.10 and 12.01.2 have issues. You can get the 12.04.1 version here:

Sounds good! I'll have to try that tomorrow since I don't have a lot of time now. Thanks for your help guys! :D

Well, if that does not work, you can dowload it from here http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/j/jockey/jockey-common_0.9.2-0ubuntu5_all.deb but you need a compatible ubuntu version.
Hope it works!

Ok, so the drama continues... I went ahead and installed 12.04.1 . I was able to get further with installing Steam this time, but the following happened: some way through downloading, I got the error "fatal error- Steam needs to be online" (even though I was online). Next, through another download, I got the error "fatal error- failed to load libsteam.so ". After doing some searching, it seemed I needed to install ia32-libs, but when I try that, the last line in the terminal is " E: unable to locate package ia32-libs". Where next?

Did you install the 32-bit (i386) or 64-bit (amd64) version? The 32-bit version will see more than 4GB of RAM due to PAE so don't worry that it won't see all your RAM. You won't have to worry about installing ia32-libs with the 32-bit version.

I installed the 32-bit version. Even though you say not to worry about installing the ia32-libs, it doesn't seem to let me progress without it...

That's odd. Did you do a clean install?

Nope. I actually booted it from a flash drive so it's easier to uninstall once I get Tux in TF2, hehe. ;P

You're honest about it. I'll give you that.

Indeed. I will say though that Linux does seem pretty nice, but I'd just prefer it not to be my primary OS. It's something I wouldn't mind having on a computer I use less often or for less tasks. :)
