so I gave it some thought, and the best option for me at this point might be trying to install the 64 bit steam again instead. But how do I uninstall steam? Im a linux noob

According to the Ubuntu Wiki there is a 64bit version, available only in the Ubuntu Software Center and not on the Steam homepage.

It isn't a 64 bit binary. It just pulls the 32 bit version alongside some 32 bit dependencies if you are on 64 bit.

The packages steam and steam64 were both 32-bit. steam64 was a placeholder with steam as a dependency. And both packages are gone now, replaced by steam-launcher.

Just to be sure...You are searching for Steam and getting no results back from the Ubuntu Software Center? Or you aren't seeing any apps at all?

We have an updated submission in the Software Center, waiting for Canonical to approve it for release.

german ubuntu wiki:
http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/Steam
But just saw it may not be anymore actual. The link behind "64-bit" is leading to a page not found

edit:
just found another link on the discussion page. There is a 64bit Version on the steampowered.com Homepage for download:
http://repo.steampowered.com/steam/archive/precise/

edit2:
and just checked the software center and package manager (muon on kubuntu).
Software Center doesnt show any Steam for installation, but the package manager has i386 and 64bit available for installation
