cant install ia32-libs
Apparently this worked to fix the "not" error with a lot of people but for me it just says:

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
ia32-libs : Depends: ia32-libs-multiarch but it is not installable
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

I am using ubuntu 12.10

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get -f install

That is fine, it just means that the package is not cached, try running the rest of the commands.

Have you modified your /etc/apt/sources.list file? Those 1's in "1386" should actually be i's

Also, can you post the error that you get when you run "sudo apt-get install ia32-libs"?
NiceRice Feb 23, 2013 @ 9:02pm
I get: Reading package lists... Done

And I dont think I touched anything, at one point I tried to delete the steam files in my home folder and .local and reinstall cause one guy said that worked but nothing else
Cuda knows what the fox says Feb 23, 2013 @ 9:07pm
Can you post the contents of your /etc/apt/sources.list file?
Also, did "sudo apt-get -f install" print anything at all?

where can I bring up sources.list?
Cuda knows what the fox says Feb 23, 2013 @ 9:14pm
Try:

cat /etc/apt/sources.list
NiceRice Feb 23, 2013 @ 9:15pm
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ quantal main restricted universe multiverse
deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ quantal main restricted universe multiverse #Added by software-properties

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ quantal-updates main restricted universe multiverse
deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ quantal-updates main restricted universe multiverse #Added by software-properties

Hmm?
Cuda knows what the fox says Feb 23, 2013 @ 9:21pm
Could you please post the entire output?

apt is complaining about this entry, and I don't see it in what you posted:
W: Failed to fetch http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/quantal-security/Release Unable to find expected entry 'main/binary-1386/Packages' in Release file (Wrong sources.list entry or malformed file)
NiceRice Feb 23, 2013 @ 9:23pm
if you mean the terminal output...that WAS the entire output
Cuda knows what the fox says Feb 23, 2013 @ 9:27pm
Ok, Try:

gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

and copy/paste the contents here
