Steam for Linux

Serious Sam 3 won't start
I'm trying to play Serious Sam 3 but it won't start, if I run it from Steam it asks for normal or modded version, but if I run it form a terminal I get this:

usr@comp /media/dfcab673-b98e-4efc-b326-4718e691d8a9/foldername/Steam/SteamApps/common/Serious Sam 3/Bin $ ./Sam3
WRN: CPU Power saving is enabled and performance governor is not used.
INF: GameEnv API: Steam
dlopen failed trying to load:
/media/dfcab673-b98e-4efc-b326-4718e691d8a9/dutt/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steamclient.sowith error:
libtier0_s.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
[S_API FAIL] SteamAPI_Init() failed; Sys_LoadModule failed to load: /media/dfcab673-b98e-4efc-b326-4718e691d8a9/dutt/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steamclient.so
[S_API FAIL] SteamAPI_Init() failed; unable to locate a running instance of Steam, or a local steamclient.dll.

But that file does exist at that location:
$ ls /media/dfcab673-b98e-4efc-b326-4718e691d8a9/dutt/Steam/ubuntu12_32/ | grep steamclient
steamclient.so

Which leaves me...confused.

You don't give any information about what system you are running and what specs your PCs has and what drivers you are using which leaves us....unable to help you.

I wasn't aware of that, I'll try to switch to whichever is the normal version. Thanks for the tip.

1. They are not NVIDIA beta drivers
2. They work just fine. Mine are even newer 313.18

You can almost always use anything by NVIDIA even if it is beta. I use their driver for years now on Linux and never had even a single issue with them.

https://www.archlinux.org/packages/extra/x86_64/nvidia/ 313.18 is stable. Ubuntu nvidia-current drivers are just extremely outdated due to Ubuntus release model.

It looks like you are missing a library which provides libtier0_s.so. Might have to do some googleing.

exuse me if im wrong but 313.09 are BETA drivers. and 313.18 are oficial releases but its a "under the table" deal in my opinion becuase they do not list it everywhere for some reason, wich makes me think its like "here we give you this but your on your own"

EDIT: and yah ubuntu is usualy a bit alower updating theyr gpu drivers but, if you go to nvidia.com and manualy search for your driver it wont give u the r313 just 310.32 wich nvidia made to bring some of the r313 features to us sonner.

Ah yes you're right. No idea how you knew but when I ran ldd steamclient.so these two lines showed up
libtier0_s.so => not found
libvstdlib_s.so => not found

Ah, so you haven't added any extra repos to apt then?

In the additional drivers dialog I'm using "NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version current)" but I don't see any actual versions on the drivers that aren't experimental betas, -304 and -310.

I tried switching to (post-release updates) (version current-updates) but that didn't help.

nop, i didnt add a single thing. installed ubuntu 13.04 wich comes with linux headers. installed nvidia-stable-test and im done.
While being on ATI I had pretty much the same problem of SS3 not starting anymore - removing ~/.steam/root/SteamApps/common/Serious\ Sam\ 3/Temp/ShaderCache/ pretty much did the trick for me.
