Serious Sam 3 is faster with kernel 3.8
Hi, I just installed the 3.8 kernel that comes out. I tried Serious Sam 3 to see if everything worked correctly and my surprise was to see that the game is much more fluid! I'm in a passage where there are many enemies on the map. I think this is thanks to optimized memory / processor of the new kernel. In any case, the game works very well despite the graphical bug related to ATI.

what about other games? TF2?
shingosama 20. feb 2013 kl. 9:39am
For TF2, I can not say anything. The game runs very well with kernel 3.7.9 and I could not notice the difference unless you have tools bench to see the difference on paper. I have a 6670 with 1GB DDR3 C2D E6400 processor and overclocked to 2.80 GHz. I also noticed that Steam behaved better.

I am about to test it myself

After installing and running on the kernel 3.8, do not forget to download / compile / install wifi drivers if you are using a wireless card.

I am with Mageia 3 - KDE 4.10 - kernel 3.8, TF2 run fine, just long time for loading and lag when i look water :/ but CSS run perfect ;)

TF2 runs perfectly at home, very fast loading. Only search server is long. But the first version I tried was slow, since the update, the game runs very well as CS source. I hope that the passage in 3.8 will perform better for everyone. Thank you Titus Torvalds

Wait a second! I already have 3.8 installed, but RC

BTW, is Valve doing anything about TF2 load time?
shingosama 20. feb 2013 kl. 9:59am
I do not know if Valve will do something. For kernel 3.8, it was said for the majority of players on Linux. Home, TF2 loads quickly with kernel 3.7.9, I'll try with 3.8, I'll let you know.

The TF2 load time will drop by a bazillion when it's on SteamPipe, the TF2Beta proves it

is anyone running proprietary nvidia drivers? If so, did you have to manually patch the driver? Did it work?
shingosama 20. feb 2013 kl. 11:01am
Home TF2 is awfully slow. I feel that there is an incompatibility issue with the latest drivers Alsa. The sound bug and the game stutters. Too bad, I'll just Serious Sam 3. I'll try CS Source.

There is new asynchronous DMA in Kernel 3.8 which should positivelly affect performance. But AFAIK only for opensource radeon drivers. However its work of AMD's engineers so its possible it enhances even fglrx/catalyst performance.

Seems that TF2 runs much better with Kernel 3.8, tho it may be fault of some other components of Ubuntu 13.04 too. Framerate is similar but stability is much better. In 12.10 I had a lot of micro stutter if there were more then 26 players at server, in 13.04 it's completly gone, smooth as butter :)

EDIT: Nvidia 310.32 drivers from Ubuntu repo.

On my PC, TF2 and CS Source is unplayable. The sound is just messing around, but the worst is that of CS, the person moves alone and just comes late. This is horrible. What's going on?
shingosama 20. feb 2013 kl. 12:59pm
I started with kernel 3.7.9, it is the same! So it does not come from the new kernel ...
