A little more detail please. Can you provide your system specs -- CPU, amount of RAM, and your video card make/model.

Also, is wubi involved here? Or Wine? Or any virtualization -- like virtualbox, vmware, etc. ?

I found this article which mentions the error you have regarding VGUI, it says it's solved by installing "xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.i686" so I would check that out. Hope it helps.

For those following the thread, the OP has:
CPU: Intel Celeron P4500
Video: AMD HD 5470 (512MB RAM)

Captain, everything I've seen suggests you need to update your video drivers before re-installing Steam.

Easy mode: System Settings -> Software Sources -> Additional Drivers

Tell us what version of the AMD driver you have installed there, please.

Doh! We took a step back. Where did you get these AMD drivers? Via the Additional Drivers app? Or direct from AMD?

The Valve page on the Ubuntu Wiki page says AMD users need pre-released updates. Please check out the AMD section, follow the steps provided, and report back. If you're still having a problem ,we can roll up our sleeves and get into it.
