Geforce 7900GS - too old for Serious Sam 3?
I have a Sun Ultra 24 with 5GB memory and an Intel Q6600 quad-core processor @ 2.4GHz. It has an Zotac NVidia 7900GS video card with 512MB memory.

With Ubuntu 12.10 (32-bit), Serious Sam 3 is pretty much unplayable; the graphics look pretty messed up. Is the problem that my graphics card is too old?

You're stuck with the legacy 304.64 driver anyway. Which is a bit unfortunate, because 310 and newer is 20-25% faster on any game and any card. But yeah your graphics card isn't to impressive aswell

The Q6600 is also part of you issue.

I've used both the nouveau driver and the nvidia driver. Same issue with both.

Still the 304 would be much better than novouae or how it is called.... much better...

Yes of course it would be better than nouveau. He should not expect any miracles though.

Will a N650 make me happier, or is it pointless because of the Q6600? I'm not looking for a kick-♥♥♥ gaming rig, mind you, just something that lets me run Serious Sam and TF2.

I was using an Q6600 with an older video card. I upgrade my card to a GTX660 and the game was playable, however on mid graphics I would still only get around 30FPS.

Moved up to an i5 and I can now push around 50-60 on Ultra.

What a nonsense, i can play SS3 fine on my Q6700@2,7 Ghz, the Q6600 is not many slower.
The culprint is only the graphicscard.

All I can say is I was using a Q6600 with a GTX660 and still had some issue. The game was much more playable but not to the level I wanted until I replaced the CPU.

It is very much possible, that a GPU is bottlenecked by a CPU. If you are using Dual GPUs it's even best to overclock your modern i7 CPU to 4-4.5 Ghz.
