Glibc 2.15 on Debian Wheezy AMD64?
Has anyone managed to get steam running on debian? I can't figure out how to satisfy the glibc 2.15 requirement. I've followed some guides all of which have little vague points and I've gotten to this point when I try to run steam from terminal:

Running Steam on debian 7.0 64-bit

I have steam running on wheezy. Problem is, I followed different guides at different times and then fiddled some on my own, so I can't recall all the steps. But for GLIBC_2.15, as far as I remember it was like this: download the ubuntu package (something with eglibc in the name), extract the library file, libc-2.15.so, and put in into
~/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32
Then start steam like this:

SD="$HOME/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32"
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH="$SD"
$SD/steam &

Thanks, I got it working though by following this guide:

It's excellent, edits the files you want edited with regexes and basic UNIX stuff so this one works if you just follow each step in the guide exactly into your terminal you'll get a working installation at the end.

cool. however, I believe in the end its not even that useful to modify the deb, because it only contains an installer that puts the actual binary in .steam in your home. I have uninstalled the deb and everything still works. Updates are downloaded by the steam binary itself, and overwrite the one in .steam. im actually wondering why the steam people bothered to make a deb file, because they are not actually utilizing the benefits of the package system. a simple .run-style installer script would do the same, and would be less distribution-dependent. however that may be, we both have a running steam, so lets enjoy! :-)

As user my script will fetch libc6 and extract it. Also latest flash is installed and updated in case of a newer flash is available. As root it installs depends but can cause problems on some systems.

I think they used a deb so they could build something that will work for the majority of users (Ubuntu) in the software that comes with it (Ubuntu Software Center)

The comment by _donda_ still holds true that "the steam people (Valve) ... are not actually utilizing the benefits of the package system" and a simple executable installer script like many games use would have been easier for them to implement, and would likely have led to a Steam without Ubuntu specific dependencies causing users of other distros hassles.

Furthermore, such an installer would have also been easier I suspect for the various distro communities to package up for their own distros, releasing Valve from the burden of bothering with packaging at all.

If you are going to publish to an open source community, after all, why not take all the benefits you can get from that fact, even if you are publishing a closed app like Steam? Let the community help when they're willing and able. Save yourself any hassles you can.

Also, thank you to the folk who posted links and information here which helped me get Steam up and running on Linux Mint Debian Edition. This also turned out to be helpful getting a few games in Desura running, which also happened to require Glibc 2.15 as well.

I'm running Crunchbang Waldorf (Debian Wheezy-derived), 64-bit, and I used this script[gist.github.com] along with some reading/experimenting/fudging to get Steam up and running.

Links to the Ubuntu Glibc in install scripts, etc., seemed to be out of date and no longer available, so I used this version[security.ubuntu.com] instead, from here[security.ubuntu.com]. I extracted the deb archive and copied all the files in the 'lib/i386-linux-gnu' directory into '~/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32', and now I'm able to run steam.

Running Steam with 'steam' at the terminal does give a warning about the 32-bit 'libc.so.6' being missing, saying "Steam may not run" and "Press enter to continue", but it does run.

To do things more cleanly, I think I could have done this instead[unix.stackexchange.com].

However, next time I'm going to try using GhostSquad57's re-write of Valve's deb package for Wheezy[github.com].

I still couldn't run any games after doing that. I got it working like this instead[crunchbang.org], which was much easier!

It can be upgraded, but it's not worth the dependency issues. You are probably better off using Jessie.

I ended up installing glib 2.17 from Jessie into Crunchbang Waldorf (Wheezy) last night after all, which was quite easy once I figured out the apt.conf and source entries. Hopefully that won't cause dependency issues in future...

Next thing for me to do is to get ATI Catalyst installed.

If I end up having to install Steam into Crunchbang Waldorf again, I'll try using the Steam package from Jessie instead.

that is exactly what i did, and i used the Catalyst driver from jessie aswell.

so far i have had an amazingly stable and functional steam install, with no issues at all running games.

using a pae kernel though, as i had all sorts of problems trying to multi arch the 64 bit version of waldarf to work with steam...

hope all is well when you install the proprietary drivers!

Nice. I didn't even know about PAE kernels until I just searched for it.

The driver installation went fine (I followed a guide on the Crunchbang forum), but trying to run DOD:S still resulted in an OpenGL-related error. I was going to try uninstalling the MESA/open source drivers to see if that fixed it, but apt wanted to remove a lot of packages which scared me off. So I've given up on using Steam in Waldorf 64-bit and will try installing it in Ubuntu 32-bit instead. Dual-booting isn't the end of the world, and it's probably better I'm not logged in to Steam when I'm supposed to be working, anyway!

This is how I was able to get the Steam client running on Debian x86_64 jessie(testing) after installing the steam.deb

(open a terminal and as a user who has sudo access)

sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386 (this adds i386 to your apt sources)
sudo aptitude update (get the newly added i386 arch package lists)
sudo aptitude install libc6:i386 libgl1-mesa-glx:i386 (these are what steam complains about missing on a base install)

Game Dev Tycoon complains about missing GLIBC_2.14 & GLIBC_2.15 on CrunchBang Waldorf.
Been trying to fix it by bouncing around some instructions, ended up having the bin claim it required libudev.so.0 from the above versions of glibc.
While there has been a steam installer for Debian systems that included newer versions of glibc saved locally in shared libraries, libudev.so.0 was not present in there.
