No Sound from Flash on Fedora 16 64-bit (solved)
Hi,

I solved an issue related to flash on Fedora Linux and wanted to share the solution here in case it helps others.

I successfully installed steam on Fedora 16 64-bit based on instructions from: http://www.kirsle.net/blog/kirsle/steam-for-linux-in-fedora-x64

But no flash at all. I resolved that by installing the Adobe Linux 32-bit yum repo and then "yum install flash-plugin.i386". (Fedora uses /usr/lib/ for the 32-bit plugin and /usr/lib64/ for the 64-bit plugin, so there's no conflict.)

After this, flash video worked but no sound. This effected both the steam client (e.g. game previews) and at least one game (The Clockwork Man 2 Demo).

Running steam from the command line (and accessing some flash) revealed the following error message:

ALSA lib dlmisc.c:270:(snd1_dlobj_cache_get) Cannot open shared library /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/alsa-lib/libasound_module_pcm_pulse.so

The path "/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/" does not exist on F16 but libasound_module_pcm_pulse.so does exist at /usr/lib/alsa-lib/

To fix this I did the following:

$ sudo mkdir /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu
$ sudo ln -s /usr/lib/alsa-lib /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/

Now everything works fine!

Many thanks to Valve for bringing Steam and games to Linux!

Hi, Thanks for describing your fix. You helped me solve a similar problem with Flash but no sound on a 64-bit Debian Wheezy install. In my case I did this because the 32-bit version of libasound_module_pcm_pulse.so was located in my home directory.

# mkdir /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/alsa-lib
# ln -s ~/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/i386/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/alsa-lib/libasound_module_pcm_pulse.so /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/alsa-lib
