Linux Promotional Item
Now I love TF2 and I love Linux. Been using it for more than three quarters of my life :) I'm a Fedora user. But it didn't register that I was playing on linux so I had to virtualise Ubuntu and am in the process of downloading TF2 to get the promotional item. (hoping it works)

Anyway, the item released for TF2 is to show someone's support of Linux (just like the earbuds; however they have become a commodity now).

My suggestion to distinguish the cream from the crop relies on those who were in the private beta and those who weren't (i.e. You have a mouse next to your name in this forum and in your 'All Games' tab you have a 'game' called Steam for Linux). This way it would work just like TF2 promotionals where if you bought/owned a game before a specific date you would get a special item. It could even be a Genuine/Vintage version of the same item (or community made; for helping out with beta testing etc.), but it would be nice if they separated us from the hoards of TF2 users trying to install Ubuntu in order to get the item.

That's my opinion anyway.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not flaming at anyone here.

I personally felt that it would become a commodity item, similar to the Buds. The hoards that are trying to install Ubuntu in order to get them, would then, not give a damn about Linux once they got their precious commodity. Now, however, it has come to my knowledge that Tux, our adorable mascot, is Not Tradable. Since this is the case, I don't think it will become a commodity or currency item similar to the afore-mentioned Buds.

I would love to see everyone get one now, because only the ones serious about giving Linux a shot, would get it, even if they knew that its not tradable and thus not worth anything.

P.S. There is no mouse by my name. I was not in the closed beta. I don't think I would see it differently, if I had been in the "cream of the crop".

You do have a mouse by your name ;) But I understand. I would love more Linux users.

Lol! You're right! I was in the closed beta, but I don't think that changes the way i feel about this. I mean I am upset that people are trying to "rip off" the system but its not tradable so the jokes on them :P

Meh.

But I'm glad that valve made the effort for Steam for Linux.

No I think the mouse classification system might not be wrong, because I was the closed beta. I got the invite not long before it went public.

Its a little bonus for us but not important at all.

Oh? Does one need to use Ubuntu to get the promotional item? I am on Mint and haven't received it yet after playing a full game of TF2.

I got the promotion item right away when I joined a game :)

Maybe it would be better to just have an option of some cosmetic feature that only shows up if you're currently running the game from Linux?

Ah, I received the item. Glad it worked out.
