EDIT: Removed outdated instructions.
EDIT2: OK, just fired up a Linux-powered laptop.
To do the blob fix:
1) Shutdown the Steam Client and ensure it isn't running in the background;
2) Open a Terminal
3) find . -name *.blob -print
4) rm /path/to/blob
5) Start Steam
Example:
./.local/share/Steam/ClientRegistry.blob
