well.. how to install steam for linux?

i followed the link from the store page here, installed the 32 bit recommended latest linux, and after the long process of download and install, finally rebooted, and the whole interface is pretty unfamiliar, but when i open firefox, download steam and try to run it, i get 'software center' managing it.
then something like (i would have copy and pasted what it said, but apparetnly you cannot highlight stuff to copy there, and i had to restart my rig in windows anyway to post this) "wrong i386" or soemthing. i looked up some solutions which mostly said things i didnt understand, or put in a prompt somewhere, BUT THEY NEVER SAID WHERE TO PUT IT.
so, this whole linux thing seems pretty stupid if you cant install the most basic programs on it. and why, with this big 'rolling out' of linux on steam, is there no Linux Discussion area?
pretty put off by the whole thing. help me get steam installed on ubuntu plz
if there are spelling errors pls ignore as the keyboard im using is quite bad.

They have released a Debian installer (Ubuntu) so if you have installed a Ubuntu system, 64-bit recommended? Then the package manger is not doing its job. If you are not Linux savvy, upload more specific details about your setup and I am sure someone will be along to help.

show info about your hardware + version of linux distro
before installing Steam you must update Linux, and install latest video drivers
in Ubuntu you don't need package from steam site - search in Ubuntu Software Center -> Steam -> Buy free
