stupid little penguin really worth all this trouble?
man, i know i have a life outside of video games.... a lot of people here don't want to take the time to learn an OS. they act like it should just be another simple Windows program... *click**click**click* done! i've seen people on here calling Linux "non-user-friendly" and "non-intuitive." of course you'll have that attitude when you come from a completely different OS. when i first learned korean, i didn't say "this language makes no sense. the grammar should work like this and this. how do you expect people to be able to use this???"

all the people installing Linux just to get a penguin: if it's REALLY worth that much trouble, take a few days to learn how to use it. an OS isn't supposed to be something you learn in a few hours. and if you really hate it that much, ask for a refund.

You are forgetting that for a lot of people it's not that much trouble and it's completely free to try. I personally find Ubuntu to be to be easier than windows in many ways.
The main problems on this forum are just people not using wubi, not updating or getting the wrong version of ubuntu(a.k.a. 12.10).

I was referring to the people who are complaining and making statements like "I don't want a conversation, I just want it made easy."

I do have to agree here. Installing and Configuring a new OS is not a trivial task (no matter what OS it is).

Things need to be done to any system to get it 100% after a clean install and if you are not willing to put in the little bit of work you probably are doing it for the wrong reasons.

That being said, I do see a lot of people getting helped and problems being solved and maybe just maybe that will give Ubuntu and Linux a fair shot.

Ack, remember that Wubi installs are more 'taster' than anything else - it may be better to use Wubi if you just want to grab the silly hat (especially as getting TF2 to work in a VM is pot luck), but a seperate partition is much more preferable for anything more than short-term use.

Having said that, I've noticed you helping out a lot of people on here and given the context (i.e. most just want to install->get hat->remove) that makes you a candidate for sainthood =)

I do agree that working in wubi is not that great, but it works while running in a vm does not. And thanks for the compliment, let's just say I had a rather boring day :P

it is tradable.
Greenbikerdude 15 Φεβ, 2013 @ 8:57πμ
@Wouter it isn't tradable. I checked twice.
Also wubi is the devil. I had dark times with it, when I first tried ubuntu. Then I dumbed my windows installation for linux and never looked back. I do not know why, but generally I have had more problems with Ubuntu and wubi than with Arch and Gentoo.
None the less I still recommend Ubuntu as a go to distro for newcomers, because it is easy to try out and if you google a problem you most likely find an answer.

You really shouldn't be so ♥♥♥♥ed about that kind of stuff. A lot of linux user react offended when someone's saying linux sucks, I'd advise to just let it be, we don't have to convert kids into linux users. It's the same about distro bashing, just relax and let them talk.
Why being upset about something someone, who you don't even know, thinks.

If steam brings Windows users to linux, be happy about it. If a few stupid 15 year olds turn into linux haters, who cares? haters gonna hate, right?
Just look at how many haters windows has and its still the most popular gaming platform.

Problem is that right now Ubuntu is in a very bad state, 12.10 is the worst release in years. It makes it look easy to install drivers while you can easily screw up your entire desktop.

This penguin should be client restricted to show only when using steam for linux and tf2 for linux; and then you solve the main problem. What with all those cheaters getting it with a crack in windows or using some VM to run it once. If you can have holiday, or full moon restricted items, why not make it platform restricted too?

thats the exact same reason why we have steam on linux on the first place to do not depend on a specific plattform only and if people wan't the "stupid" penguin let them just use linux once to get it,and let's help them because i really belive this is what is all about, not the penguin, or forcing people to use linux but encourage them to try it and see what linux is all about. I agree that ubuntu may not be the best distro and has a lot of problems, heck even i think wubi it's a very bad solution for it but it gives themm the opportunity to see the good and the bad part about linux, it maybe faster but not everything may work out-of-the-box. Personally i see this as a very good opportunity to help people ( if they want ) to try something "new" and if ubuntu it's not a "good" choice it's still the best place to start ( maybe linux mint is better for this ) thatn try to get them to install gentoo or even archlinux, with ubuntu they can see not only the good part of having a very customizable OS but also the flaws compared to windows and mac, i know you may think all this people just don't care about linux but the fact that they are willing to try it out just for this is i think one of the best things that may happend for linux gaming. i just beent since 2010 and i dn't regret getting rid of windows because i realized how linux is not the best OS for desktop but the potential that has to become the best one for everyone that is willing to give it a try and understand what to do and what not to do in the OS but most important: why you are doing it

P.S: what do you guys think of the valve decision of TF2 for the first game for linux and Portal for mac in steam ?

Why? Why does this bother you?

Let's say 10000 people install Ubuntu today only to get the hat. Then let's say 5% are surprised
how much they like what they see and keep using it. That would be 500 new Linux user in a single day. And the rest are no different than before - that they invested a few hours to install and then dump Linux costs us nothing.

IMHO that little item is brilliant.
