linux mint cinnamon?

does the linux steam client work on linux mint cinnamon 14.1? or am I just wasting my time here? I haven't been able to get it to do anything other than update, even after sudo....

Last time I tried Mint in a VM Steam installed without any problems just like on Ubuntu. It's just a reskinned Ubuntu afterall. Double Click the *.deb let it download everything. Start Steam let it update and fetch the files for the client. Done.

What steps did you take? Steam runs on all Linux distros.

I installed from the .deb, Its on my desktop, but every time I click on it all it does is update and then close. all I ever get is the small dark gray updating box and thats it.

After it has updated you should have a Steam icon available in your applications menu.
Open the Dash with the Windows key and type "Steam" it should show you the launcher icon.

You could also open a Terminal and execute it with "steam".

I think you are trying to start the client through the installer if I understand you correct.

I've been using Steam on Linux mint 14.1 (64bit) for some time now without any issues. You could try to run Steam from the terminal as T.jp mentioned and see if you get any error messages that might help you with troubleshooting.

installing mate files over the cinnamon files killed it...... reinstalling cinnamon.

What is the output when you use open Steam through Terminal?

nothing happened, as if I never clicked it at all. i'm reinstalling linux, i'll see if that helps.

You are doing something strange. You should have tried to launch it with "steam" in terminal and posted the output here. That way we could have helped you. Now no one knows what you are actually doing.

If you type "steam" in terminal and hit Enter. Something will happen even if the Client fails in the end.

The Terminal doesn't display any text? There's usually some error messages at least.

Is this running as a standard user? Something definitely has gone wrong there if you're getting no debug. Steam's a very verbose application.
