Small screen - Games from Valve(?)
Whenever I start CS:S or TF2, the screen resolution changes (?) and I get only a small centered frame where the menu comes up, but it wont let me press any buttons.

CS 1.6 gives me a similar problem, but the frame aint centered on the screen. :/

I don't know about 1.6, but CS:S tells me when I enter the "video" tab in settings that it runs in 1680*1050 (my native resolution), and nothing happens if I change it and press apply.

Computer:
Debian Wheezy 64bit
dwm window manager
ATi Radeon HD5870 (fglrx drivers)

glxinfo | grep "direct rendering":
direct rendering: Yes

World of Goo and TeeWorlds (the only other games I've tried so far) gives me full-screen, so I personally don't see that it would be my computers fault.

Any ideas on how to fix this? Is it already a known problem? If so, would anyone mind sending me a link to a thread discussing this so that I can follow any progress?

If you swap dwm out for another WM, does the same issue occur?
(for sake of debugging, may be an SDL interaction with dwm issue)

I think this might be a bug with your graphics drivers. Let your screen do the scaling, not your drivers and it will probably be fixed.

I tried changing to screen scaling in ccc, but it didn't change anything. :(

Any idea for a good WM to test with?
