Cant start Steam, Ubuntu 12.04LTS 64bit
hi there,

i installed ubuntu 12.04 with the wubi installer.
the amd video driver was installed this way

http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Quantal_Installation_Guide#Installing_Catalyst_Manually_.28from_AMD.2FATI.27s_site.29_BETA.2FEXPERIMENTAL

the only part where i wasn't 100% sure that it worked was creating the xorg.conf file. this is the one i have right now:

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
DefaultDepth 24
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI radeon 4800"
Driver "fglrx"
EndSection

Section "Module"
Load "glx"
EndSection

(the normal way in the ubuntu wiki didn't work, the experimental drivers didn't show up)

when i start steam with the terminal this is the output

joe@ubuntu:~$ steam

Did you run aticonfig --initial -f and rebooted afterwards? My xorg.conf looks a lot different.
Also what is your output after typing fglrxinfo

I got those errors too: i did forget to run aticonfig --initial -f to create me a new xorg.conf
SlowJoe 10 fev. 2013 às 10:49
when i use
aticonfig --initial -f
i get
aticonfig: No supported adapters detected

and fglrxinfo gives

X Error of failed request: BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 153 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 19 (X_GLXQueryServerString)
Serial number of failed request: 12
Current serial number in output stream: 12

dont really know what to do with this information.

Hey how did you install the ati driver? i see you did not though the offfial method so this can casue problems. Is it the new ati beta driver ? https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Valve this is how ubuntu recommends you install the drivers. i would try amds site if jocky doesin't find your driver. X-window problems hint it is very likely graphics related does steam say your cards outdated ?
Artemis3 10 fev. 2013 às 11:19
Probably failed to remove the system supplied drivers. Installing manual way is a big no-no, especially following a guide made for the wrong version.
SlowJoe 10 fev. 2013 às 11:26
i tried to follow this method https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Valve#AMD.2BAC8-ATI_Graphics
the problem is that in step 5. i don't know what to do because there were always only the normal driver listed and not several like in the screenshot above.

i used the method that is linked there which is described as alternative version. this alternative version installes the newest beta driver 13.2
http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/rn_ln_cat13-2_beta.aspx

and to your last question, steam doesn't give any output at all when just clicked on the desktop. nothing happens. only when started trough the terminal console the error messages posted above are the output.
SlowJoe 10 fev. 2013 às 11:27
@artemis3 why is it a big no-no. the official valve ubuntu wiki links to that manual installtion instruction and says to use the latest experimental drivers
SlowJoe 10 fev. 2013 às 11:31
i also used
sudo sh /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh
sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx fglrx_* fglrx-amdcccle* fglrx-dev*

before
Dra'bla 10 fev. 2013 às 11:36
Could you try to install the drivers this "normal" way? :
0) Remove / purge old fglrx stuff
1) Download latest driver: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx
2) Unzip the package
3) sudo chmod a+rwx unziped-package.run
4) sudo ./ati-driver-installer-xxxxx-x86.x86_64
5) sudo aticonfig --initial -f
6) reboot
7) run an post fglrxinfo

well if you got up to step 5 with no problems used the software sources and find no update for your driver or find it in the repos once you enable the pre-released updates. i see your card must not be supported under this new 12.7 beta drivers casue amds kinda sucks with linux and in general with there users. Man they tend to drop support for not to old cards i found that out the hard way and had to move to nvidia . http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=amd_catalyst_legacy2&num=1 Edit im sure when steam comes out your card will work but for now where on beta drivers and for some reason amd blacklisted yours from the updates for the beta sry man

the instructions posted by drabla worked fine.
yay.
don't know why this is not posted on the wiki.
thanks for all the responses and the help.

hd 4000 series is not supported by the current drivers, you should install catalyst 12.6.

Did anyone find a fix for this?
It seems to be a problem because 'glxCreateConrtext ubuntu' comes up with 'steam doesn't run because...' the symbol is not found; but glxgears runs... so what is the fix? I think it's something steam is doing.. I had this issue; my application would not run, but glxgears would; what's the difference? I was loading the part that loaded the libary with dlopen() with a flag of RTLD_PRIVATE instead of RTLD_GLOBAL. Once I change the line to load the core system with GLOBAL everything worked. DOn't know where bug reports go, and I wouldn't run steam on linux....

The legacy fglrx driver has been dropped entirely by the Ubuntu maintainers, without pinning the package you'll always get an incompatible version as an update - probably the same will happen with a manually installed version, as the installer automatically generates deb packages which would be considered 'old' compared to what the repo has to offer.
