NVIDIA 7 Series -> OpenGL 2.0. Source Engine Requirement -> OpenGL 3.0

Unfortunately, Source games on Linux currently require OpenGL 3.0 graphics cards. On Windows, you can run Source games even on DirectX 7 hardware (for example, Nvidia GeForce 2 series which only supports OpenGL 1.2). This is a huge difference between Windows and Linux requirements and I hope Valve can fix it at some point in the future. There is a large number of Linux users with older graphics cards because they didn't need a more powerful GPU since there weren't many games on Linux. Basically, the current requirement for Source games on Linux is a GeForce 8 series or higher and Radeon HD2000 or higher.

Some people chose to install it on outdated hardware, and wasn't particularly interested in the more demanding 3D games/software, which of course is completely unrelated. Games like Postal 2: Share the Pain, Neverwinter Nights + expansion packs, Unreal Tournament 2003/2004, Quake 1-4, Doom 3 + expansion do still have requirements, and they also had it back then. Furthermore, your claim about lack of games is a bit flawed as I remember it differently. The engine Source engine have its requirements at the moment, but it will most likely receive optimisations.
