Steam for Linux

Steam Runtime looks... interesting
Now I want to try creating a virtual machine and symlinking some of those folders to system folders, and putting stuff in folders that (gasp) actually make sense (/usr/share I'm looking at you) to see if I can really integrate steam into the OS.

So now I'm thinking "If I immediately wanted to try OS integration, maybe that *IS* what VALVe is thinking."

Steambox anyone?

There's been previous discussions opened on this subject, I think it's either
A) Steam Box OS
and/or
B) Valve is making an Ubuntu based OS (Possibly GabenOS, anybody? :P) for Steam that they can focus support on.
I wouldn't mind a SteamOS to be honest.. just as long as it's Ubuntu/Mint based.
Can somebody explain what is Steam Runtime?
Is it chroot-like tool?
Sorry to also chime in with this. I figured I'd find something out by Googling, but all I've found is this:

1. STEAM_RUNTIME is also an env var that can be set to 0 which apparently fixes some issues for some people.

2. STEAM_RUNTIME is enabled by default under Ubuntu.

Still no real idea of what it is though. I'm kind of curious...
STEAM_RUNTIME makes steam use the libraries that are shipped with the updates now. Like libappindicator which no distro other than Ubuntu needs, because other distros usually don't use the Unity Desktop. Since the tray icon depends on this library it is now shipped with Steam and stored in the Steam Folder so every distro can make use of it. It is enabled on all distros by default.
