If by text mode you mean you are running outside of a GUI, or at the command line, then it'll help you to know that that has no effect on the requirements of the game.

It's a 3D game. It needs a graphics library. The 3D graphics library on Linux is OpenGL. As simple as that. Or do you think it is required just for the fun of it? ;-)

How did you expect to play a video game without video?

Most people "play" TF2 in textmode to get items through idling. Imho it's stupid.
There is an item cap and idling will not improve the chances of getting items at all.

I have a trading bot that I want to have idling in my server, which is why I want textmode.

Apologies, I initially thought it was a request to literally play the game from CLI or something, heh. I didn't even know there was a text mode to idle with.

If the rumor of a Linux promo item is true then this is going to become a popular way to farm the items from alt accounts.

long before tf2 gone f2p, us idlers used -noshaderapi param to completely shut down graphic rendering in text mode and that effectively brought memory usage down to 50 mb ish..you could even idle tf2 on very weak computer that has integrated video card..

but if you try to use that param today, tf2 will crash to desktop instantly..i dont know if the param is broken or valve intentionally crippled it to discourage idling but either way it's not working anymore..

maybe someone can bring this up over valve's steam-for-linux github. those guys are all ears on bugs report on their linux games port

It's not stupid when people do items farming...many alt accounts, many items even if it's like 12 per week per account. some have like hundreds accounts, you still need those to be premium though.

you can do through even a local serve on random map.
