[HOWTO] Installing on Debian Wheezy 64bit
In order for steam to install, we need to add the i386 architecture and install the appropriate libs. Here is how to do it:

sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
(add experimental repositories)
sudo apt-get update
sudo aptitude -t experimental install multiarch-support libc6 libc6:i386
sudo apt-get install ia32-libs libcairo2:i386 libcups2:i386 libfontconfig1:i386 libfreetype6:i386 \ libgdk-pixbuf2.0-0:i386 libglib2.0-0:i386 libgtk2.0-0:i386 libnspr4:i386 libnss3:i386 \ libopenal1:i386 libpango1.0-0:i386 libxinerama1:i386 libxrandr2:i386 libxrender1:i386
wget http://media.steampowered.com/client/installer/steam.deb
wget http://launchpadlibrarian.net/74240400/python-xkit_0.4.2.3_all.deb
wget http://launchpadlibrarian.net/129505536/jockey-common_0.9.7-0ubuntu7.7_all.deb
sudo dpkg -i python-xkit_0.4.2.3_all.deb
sudo dpkg -i jockey-common_0.9.7-0ubuntu7.7_all.deb

I ran into the "steam depends on libpulse0 (>= 1:0.99.1); however:
Version of libpulse0:i386 on system is 2.0-6." error and I do not know how to resolve it.

Force installing steam ( sudo dpkg -i --force-all steam_latest.deb ) then running steam gives an error:
/home/name/.local/share/Steam/steam.sh: line 337: 6733 Segmentation fault $STEAM_DEBUGGER "$STEAMROOT/$PLATFORM/$STEAMEXE" "$@"
Installing bootstrap /home/name/.local/share/Steam/bootstrap.tar.xz
/home/name/.local/share/Steam/steam.sh: line 337: 6781 Segmentation fault $STEAM_DEBUGGER "$STEAMROOT/$PLATFORM/$STEAMEXE" "$@"

Nice. I'll use this when I get my OS running.

bonly, did you manage to get it working?

For people recommending `STEAM_RUNTIME=0 steam` its a temp. workaround for issues with steams bundled libraries. If you have issues running steam without the flag, please report it on the github so we can fix it for more users :) https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues

I got this to work without needing the STEAM_RUNTIME=0 trick, but the experimental repository was not correct at the time I did it. If I may make a slight modification to your steps, this worked for me:

sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
Add the sid (unstable) repository by adding the following line to /etc/apt/sources.list - "deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian sid main"
sudo apt-get update
sudo aptitude -t sid install multiarch-support libc6 libc6:i386
Immediately remove the sid repository from /etc/apt/sources.list
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ia32-libs libcairo2:i386 libcups2:i386 libfontconfig1:i386 libfreetype6:i386 \ libgdk-pixbuf2.0-0:i386 libglib2.0-0:i386 libgtk2.0-0:i386 libnspr4:i386 libnss3:i386 \ libopenal1:i386 libpango1.0-0:i386 libxinerama1:i386 libxrandr2:i386 libxrender1:i386
Download steam_latest.deb from http://store.steampowered.com.
wget http://launchpadlibrarian.net/74240400/python-xkit_0.4.2.3_all.deb
wget http://launchpadlibrarian.net/129505536/jockey-common_0.9.7-0ubuntu7.7_all.deb
sudo dpkg -i python-xkit_0.4.2.3_all.deb
sudo dpkg -i jockey-common_0.9.7-0ubuntu7.7_all.deb
sudo dpkg -i steam_latest.deb

Oh, and major props to Valve because once I got the Linux version working, I already had a library of familiar games ready to install.

I recommend to use this tutorial:

Worked for me several times!
