Steam for Linux

Games unable to launch on Linux Mint 13
Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu, so I imagined it would work with Steam. I am able to download games, but cannot play them.

The games I have for Linux are FTL: Faster Than Light and TF2.

FTL - does not launch on Linux (It successfully runs on Windows). When I launch it, my desktop environment crashes and I return to tty. Confused, I restarted mdm and relaunched the game, which gave the same crash and a warning that my system temperature was too high. Checking '`top`, I see that there are now two instances of FTL that detached themselves from my desktop environment and did not shut down when it crashed (whereas all my other applications did). Both instances were taking up ~90-100% CPU

TF2 - I understand it's a common problem, but I followed http://steamcommunity.com/app/221410/discussions/0/846938351032713908/ and the black screen issue remains unresolved. The Steam overlay DOES work, and the splash screen audio plays, but no video aside from that.

System - Linux Mint 13, Intel dual core i7 @ 2.67 GHz, Nvidia 330M GPU.
Display manager MDM, attempted with Awesome WM and Cinnamon both.
Nvidia drivers consistently crash my computer, so I am using the Nouveau drivers.

If it helps, the latest Windows Nvidia drivers also do not work for most games and freeze up on all 3D games, with the exception of Magicka.

Games are optimized to work together with proprietary nvidia and amd drivers. It will be hard for you to play it with nouveau then sadly as it is but true :-/

I think they will fix this later. Well I hope so at least :-)

That's unfortunate. I spent the majority of last summer fighting with the proprietary drivers to make them work, but was unsuccessful, and several SO sites and /r/linux, /r/ubuntu, etc. were unable to help. I tracked it down to what appeared to be something akin to a memory leak that would cause the x server to crash after a certain amount of usage (the less intensive the use, the longer it lasted). Installing nouveau drivers was the only thing that fixed it.
