[BUG] [SOLVED] Steam stopped working after manual update to latest AMD drivers (13.1)
I've manually updated to the latest AMD drivers (13.1) and Steam has stopped working. When I try to start it absolutely nothing happens.

I've also downloaded the steam_latest.deb and tried to reinstall. The Software Manager bit of the installation seams to go ok and then it says to start Steam Beta to finish the installation. When I get to the that point, I'm back to the start - Steam won't run, I click the icon and nothing happens.

Thanks

if the drivers dont work, roll back.

AMD loves to break their drivers through updates, so i suggest you get the less than latest version from the ubuntu "additional drivers" menu.

How did you update? According to what instructions?

Hi, and thanks for the answers. I've now managed to sort it out altough I'm not sure what caused the problem.

I did a complete remove of the AMD drivers using
sudo apt-get --purge remove fglrx
and then I manually removed all the Steam files from /home/username/.steam and /home/username/.local/share/Steam except from those in the SteamApps folder where the downloaded content is stored. After that I reinstalled the AMD 13.1 drivers but this time by simply executing the .run file and going through the GUI setup and then I reinstalled Steam from the steam_latest.deb file. Finally, I run Steam and it started just fine and it also detected the downloaded content in the SteamApps folder so it didn't try to download it all over again.

I'm guessing that the problem might have been caused by my trying to install the AMD drivers manually with the method below:
sudo sh amd-etc-etc-13.1-linux-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/precise
sudo dpkg -i fglrx*.deb
sudo aticonfig --initial
I also wanted to point out that the method above doesn't work at all on Quantal (12.10) eventhough the AMD 13.1 drivers are supposed to be comparible with the new version of Xorg. However, simply executing the .run file and going through the GUI setup works just fine. And before anyone suggests it, yes I did replace Ubuntu/precise with Ubuntu/quantal in the command when I tried it.

The new drivers work just fine, I think it was my fault.
