AMD Proprietary Drivers
So, since they just fixed the drivers to work with ubuntu 12.10, should I select fglrx or fglrx-updates through software updater? I know I would be best off downloading straight from AMD's site, but last time I had to wipe my computer because it didn't play nicely with unity, not twking any chance this time.

fglrx is the driver when they froze Ubuntu to be released as 12.10. As for fglrx-updates, I do not know how that works, I do not think it even received the AMD Catalyst Display Driver 12.10 yet.

As for manually installing the driver, when you do, even through the Software Sources control panel, you have to ensure you have the Linux headers package installed, or Unity will not load.

So jus fglrx then?

Use the free software driver. If something does not appear to be working, or things are running slow, try fglrx. If that does not satisfy you, try gflrx-updates. If that does not satisfy you either, grab the ones from the AMD website.

See this thread for guidance:
AMD Catalyst Display Driver 13.1 is out

Be sure to install the Linux headers, or Unity will not show up if you use the proprietary drivers:

sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic

Once you have upgraded your Ubuntu to a new major release, repeat the process. Start with the free software driver, if that does not satisfy you, step up as explained above.

Try asking on the Ubuntu forum.
