opensuse 12.2 kde problems
I thought of creating a thread where we can report all steam client problems about the specific os. I ll start:
- tray icon doesn't work as it does in windows.
- getting this
Steam needs to install these additional packages: jockey-common, python-apt, zenity, xterm, multiarch-support, libcurl3-gnutls:i386, libgl1-mesa-dri:i386, libgl1-mesa-glx:i386, libjpeg-turbo8:i386, libogg0:i386, libpixman-1-0:i386, libtheora0:i386, libudev0:i386, libvorbis0a:i386, libvorbisenc2:i386, libvorbisfile3:i386, libasound2:i386, libc6:i386, libcairo2:i386, libcups2:i386, libdbus-1-3:i386, libfontconfig1:i386, libfreetype6:i386, libgcc1:i386, libgcrypt11:i386, libgdk-pixbuf2.0-0:i386, libglib2.0-0:i386, libgtk2.0-0:i386, libnspr4:i386, libnss3:i386, libopenal1:i386, libpango1.0-0:i386, libpng12-0:i386, libpulse0:i386, libstdc++6:i386, libx11-6:i386, libxext6:i386, libxfixes3:i386, libxi6:i386, libxinerama1:i386, libxrandr2:i386, libxrender1:i386, zlib1g:i386, libsdl1.2debian:i386 root's password:
when starting steam. Tried to install them with zypper, didn't work.
- Although the swapped cursor appears fixed in the normal interface, it is not fixed in the "shift+tab" mode when in-game.
- For the game Uplink (and possibly for others), it steals focus and does not allow me to leave the window (I.e. can't "alt+tab" or change desktops) without closing the game.

The pointer gets fixed after I install my VGA's drivers

Tray Icon may not work well on 64bit systems.

Those libraries were supposed to get installed with Steam, it asks to install them on the first installation

I have ati 5850 with fglrx drivers installed

does the icon work in 32bit kde systems?

i did install some packages when i first installed steam. but after the last update it shows this message. i enter my pass and then tries to install with apt-get. when it fails steam starts normally and everything works (apart from the previous issues i have)

Even after installing the drivers, the pointer is black and mirrored?

The icon always worked fine with me on 32bit OS's

That I can't say much, because since the Steam package is not on suse repos I moved to LinuxMint, which installed everything for me.

Have you tried instaling all those packages manually one by one?

BTW I have a Nvidia card, I'm gonna guess here and say your drivers aren't working properly as well too

Yes the pointer is black and mirrored only in steam window after installing the ati drivers from the ati site. About the drivers i dont know if they work properly. All i can say is that ss3 plays all ultra in windows but in linux i have to set graphics to medium.

About the tray icon do you know any possible solutions?

About the packages i run this:
zypper install jockey-common python-apt zenity xterm multiarch-support libcurl3-gnutls:i386 libgl1-mesa-dri:i386 libgl1-mesa-glx:i386 libjpeg-turbo8:i386 libogg0:i386 libpixman-1-0:i386 libtheora0:i386 libudev0:i386 libvorbis0a:i386 libvorbisenc2:i386 libvorbisfile3:i386 libasound2:i386 libc6:i386 libcairo2:i386 libcups2:i386 libdbus-1-3:i386 libfontconfig1:i386 libfreetype6:i386 libgcc1:i386 libgcrypt11:i386 libgdk-pixbuf2.0-0:i386 libglib2.0-0:i386 libgtk2.0-0:i386 libnspr4:i386 libnss3:i386 libopenal1:i386 libpango1.0-0:i386 libpng12-0:i386 libpulse0:i386 libstdc++6:i386 libx11-6:i386 libxext6:i386 libxfixes3:i386 libxi6:i386 libxinerama1:i386 libxrandr2:i386 libxrender1:i386 zlib1g:i386 libsdl1.2debian:i386
and it says "no provider" for each one of these

About the pointer all I can say is that for me it gets normal after driver install.

About the Steam package, since it's no longer o SUSE repos there are some other ways to get the updated version, perhaps even in this forum. I gave a look today and seems to be a way to get it, like "zyppo xxx.steam.deb", and then converting it to .rpm, but I can't say the process neither if it works.

Don't mention it, hope you get Steam working in no time! =)

The backward mouse can be fixed (I think) by creating /usr/share/icons/default/index.theme and putting your theme inside:

[icon theme]
Inherits=oxy-neon

Hi, tried the following with a "little" more success (replaced ':i386' with the '-32bit' more closely suited to OpenSuSE package structures):

sudo zypper install jockey-common python-apt zenity xterm libcurl3-gnutls-32bit libgl1-mesa-dri-32bit libgl1-mesa-glx-32bit libjpeg-turbo8-32bit libogg0-32bit libpixman-1-0-32bit libtheora0-32bit libudev0-32bit libvorbis0a-32bit libvorbisenc2-32bit libvorbisfile3-32bit libasound2-32bit libc6-32bit libcairo2-32bit libcups2-32bit libdbus-1-3-32bit libfontconfig1-32bit libfreetype6-32bit libgcc1-32bit libgcrypt11-32bit libgdk-pixbuf2.0-0-32bit libglib2.0-0-32bit libgtk2.0-0-32bit libnspr4-32bit libnss3-32bit libopenal1-32bit libpango1.0-0-32bit libpng12-0-32bit libpulse0-32bit libstdc++6-32bit libx11-6-32bit libxext6-32bit libxfixes3-32bit libxi6-32bit libxinerama1-32bit libxrandr2-32bit libxrender1-32bit zlib1g-32bit libsdl1.2debian-32bit

... However, although installing a few more of them, many packages are still not found.
More importantly, after letting it continue I get the error:

Fatal Error: Failed to load steamui.so

My best guesses are that this is compiled for ubuntu systems and maybe that is why it is not working OR alternatively, the above-missing packages are relating to why it couldn't load the library.

Any idea if we could get the source for the libraries and compile them ourselves, or even if they could be compiled for OpenSuSE systems and the libraries made available?
(not too likely considering Valve is working directly with Ubuntu and wouldn't easily work with 2 OS's during the Beta phases)

Any assistance appreciated!
Thanks.

thanks for your help! the link is 404. also we can install steam in suse, access everything and play games etc. our problem is elsewhere.

I have been a busy boy here. ;-) Anyway, similar issues to yours are reported here: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues?page=1&state=open.

hackerkok, you noted you can access steam and play the games etc... so you don't receive the error about loading the "steamio.so" ? -- P.S. His link works without the trailing "." ;)
