NVIDIA 310.14 and newer versions
Everytime I try to upgrade my graphics driver from 310.14 to any newer version, Steam gives me Fatal error Steam.so which is fixable by removing all 32libraries and Steam, and then re-installing everything again. BUT, when the game is opening it gives me an OpenGL error which I have no idea how to fix.

Have any of you had success updating your drivers? If so, could you discribe what you did?

Ubuntu 12.04.1 64bit

No one knows your distro nor the way you installed the driver.

I have no problems with the beta Nvidia driver. The driver you use , Nvidia 310.14 is the latest stable (for linux) , but I tested beta (313.09) and TF2 plays also good without problems. (Ubuntu 12.10 32bit)
Although towo01 has a point , you must give more info about your distro.

Sorry for the lack of information, but no need to be rude.

310.14 is the latest Jockey installation. Newer versions are installed manually, which causes everything to collapse. The point of this thread is to know if you had success on updating your VGA's driver, and if so, how you did it.

Atm there is no need to install anything above 310.14. Tho if there will be, we will get autoupdate from Ubuntu repos/jockey (Canonical has said that they want to keep gpu drivers up to date from now on, not only at start of new release).

With manual you mean the *.run installer from NVIDIA.com? That is not recommended anyway, because it doesn't register the files that are being installed with your local package manager. It's no wonder that you run into trouble because there are probably dozens of file conflicts.

I did not have any problems with steam after updating my drivers but that's on a different Distro. Currently using 313.19.

I have no problems updating to ANY driver on opensuse for example.

Yes, I mean the .run from nvidia.com.

The main issue of nvidia run files is that sometimes with kernel updates you may get a non working xorg driver until you reinstall nvidia driver. Not a major issue for an advanced linux user but a real show stopper for linux beginners.

In debian and ubuntu the run-installer will ♥♥♥♥ up the system, especialy in 64bit with multiarch.

Yes a kernel update will of course break your nvidia module because the run-installer is compiling the module against your current version of linux-headers. If that changes you'd have to rebuild the module. So it's really bad practice to manually instll any software on Linux. The package manager is there for a reason.

While it's not recommended to install NVIDIA drivers manually in Ubuntu/Debian based distros, NVIDIA installer builds dkms module which solves problem with kernel update :)

I thought for Ubuntu there is this PPA which provides more up to date drivers for NVIDIA. Why not use that. At least you will get clean installation and removal if you use the package manager.

There is a PPA for Ubuntu-based distributions. Just run this:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

Note: that's a bleeding edge repo, so no guarantees that anything will work, but I've had success with that and, IMHO, that's the best way to upgrade your Nvidia graphics on an Ubuntu-based distro. The .run files from Nvidia's site don't do well with Ubuntu-based distros.

I use the "experimental" drivers listed in synaptic, which gives me 310.14 and STEAM works fine - no issues (except the missing panel applet, which is a libappindicator:i386 issue).

Got the 310.19 working on Mint by typing

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current nvidia-settings

Newest driver 313.18 since today. No issues with anything so far on my PC.

Seems like the PPA is always 2 versions behind.
