http://zerowing.idsoftware.com/linux/quake4/Quake4FrontPage/

Runs stable und fast

That only works if you have the files.
Headbraker[GER][TUX].ubu 15 jan 2013 à 3h56

So you should still ask id software to add it, not Valve. If I work at Valve and I want to add Diablo 3 to Steam, I can't just do it without Blizzard wanting to do it first.

Nonetheless, you can buy Quake 4 from steam, use the provided data files and cd key that comes with it, stored in a file within the game folder, and install it natively on linux using the installer provided in the link above, and add it as a non-steam game. That's what I did. Only issue I have is with sound but that's fixable :) By the way Prey also has a linux client and it runs flawlessly.

I have a feeling games that already have native Linux ports can be added to Steam easily. I'm sure Quake 4 is not high on their priorities list, but it will probably happen.

They won't do it. It would be a shock for John Carmack when all of a sudden people actually start playing their titles on Linux, because they don't have to buy the Windows DVD and juggle with data files and some linux binary that is hidden somewhere on an FTP server.

Yes iD Software hasn't released anything good since Quake 3 which was 13 years ago.

A long time ago, I bought a retail version of Quake 3 for Linux that came in a tin box. They were available, people just didn't buy them. I see you can still get Quake 3 for Windows on Steam (somehow I doubt that Linux version would still work out of the box).
