Hi!

if you are planing on only make repo for Ubunto you ppl are lost, there are more Linux distś out there, and iam not using Ubuntu any more and moved on to Fedora 17, thats mutch more apeling to me, but i still want to use STEAM and all my gameś i have on my STEAM account, so for the moment, dualboot, but i dont want that reboot in to windows just to play some games.


so pleas, forget the Licens issues and let ppl on the internet help and make packs for different Linus Dist OS than just Ubuntu, as i said, we are more than just Ubuntu and Linux are growing as OS, think this thure properly pls.

You realize you can just use alien to install the deb file under fedora, right? It's completely reasonable of them to only want to support one distro at first, especially under a beta program. I'm sure they'll roll out more official support once they've worked out the first distro. Give it time.

This question has already been answered. Steam started at Ubuntu and other distros are porting it.

This is pretty simple, but some people are new.
Start by getting the .deb:
http://media.steampowered.com/client/installer/steam.deb
Then, if you're on a .deb based distro:
dpkg -i steam.deb
as root, there you go.

For non-.deb'ers (Fedora 17 here):
sudo yum install dpkg
or whatever package manager you use (YaST, pacman, etc)
Extract the .deb
dpkg -x steam.deb
"Install it"
sudo rsync -rv ./usr /
On first launch, I got a weird xterm-like window asking for the password for the user "user", I just closed it and everything worked. Use proprietary drivers by the way people. On fedora, rpmfusion has akmods for every card known to man (nVidia, AMD, AMD-Legacy).
This is pretty basic, but I just want to make sure that people DON'T USE ALIEN.
That horrendous piece of what can barely be called software will ruin your perms on / and basically force you to reinstall, hopefully your /home is on a separate partition/lvm.

4) where is my tray icon? (doesn't work yet on 64 bit)
5) this game is in my linux library but won't launch! (email the developer of the game and ask them when it will be ready)

+1 it is a bit annoying that people start the same threads over and over again because they are to lazy to search first

yeah, that's supposed to be part of #5, but you're right it seems most people on here wouldn't make the connection anyway~
