Steam Beta is the Worst Thing to Happen to My Linux Installation.
I was thrilled to see Steam on Linux a few weeks ago. . finally! A step forward towards gaming that is not mainly dependent on Windows.

I installed it. That was a stupid mistake.

The install started asking for NVidia experimental drivers, updating this, changing that - I don't even know what it had done by the end.

Now, I'm jumping in and out of GDM, LightDM, different driver installs, crash here, crash there.

I used Linux fine until this happened. Now, I remember why I have Win 7 on half of my hard drive, and Linux on the other half.

Tread lightly.

Steam for Linux BETA. BETA, rings a bell? What do you expect from using a product in testing phase? Since it's beta you use it at your own risk. Tho participating in beta and providing feedback helps with faster final release, so instead of pointless and groundless and babylike whining, post what's up with your Steam/Linux install, so Valve devs could figure out how to fix it. And btw Windows 7 3 years later is still slower and more buggy then pretty much most of Linux distro, even those with cutting edge, experimental packages (arch, fedora etc).

Looks like a driver problem.

I personally would do the following:

Remove Nvidia drivers (CTRL+ALT+F1 / sudo apt-get remove --purge nvidia-*)
Remove Steam (save the steammapps folder) (sudo apt-get remove --purge steam / and then at your home folder you press CTRL +H and delete the .Steam folder.)
Install 310 Experimental driver again, no other driver.

If it all fails, re-installing the system seems like a good idea to me.

What distro are you using?
Yeah, that's the Nvidia drivers, Steam is not the problem, except for the fact that it recommended them.

No problems here.

Move along folks, this is just a complaint. He obviously doesnt want to fix the problem or he would have provided more information about his system and the exact issues he is having with the BETA.

What drivers, you just mention "different driver installs" ? , What distro ? What exactly is happening ?

It sounds like windows 7 might be the place for you, but remember, Tread Lightly.................

It's beta software. you're a tester. Got it?
Olorin 13/jan/2013 às 8:02
The packages are in Ubuntu Experimental for a reason. Yes, it's the packages that are experimental, not the driver.

sure its still a beta but what we have now works fine for me. less troubles... i bought some games on steam like tf2, trine2 or killing floor to get my own impression of the actually state and was really surprised that its so easy to handle in the relatively short time of exisiting c-beta and o-beta. finding trine 2 is running better and looking smoother compared to the windows version and there around ~40 games out now :) my personal summary is a very good start of the beta. in my eyes steam for linux could be for advanced pc users something like landing on the moon was for humanity :)
Olorin 13/jan/2013 às 9:34
Yes, still beta, but it has indeed been improvements over a short period of time. I can finally enjoy Trine 2: The Goblin Menace, so I'm quite happy. And we that are part of the bigger picture should use this opportunity for what it is worth.

Then uninstall Steam and do the above users' suggestions to fix the problem if it was such a big mistake.
Peruna 14/jan/2013 às 10:03
I had same problem by myself but it was when i used ubuntu 12.10 but when i changed it to 12.04 this works great ^^ u should try that.

Could any mod just close this thread already? OP doesn't even care (or is too ashamed) to respond.

Fairly stable with Nvidia-310.19 stable. We had to do some fiddling to get Steam to work right and package up correctly. But then it IS beta and I am using Slackware64 14.0 mutilib. There was a lot of hacking around before I could run SS3 and TF2.

So the OP pansy boy ranted because Linux and Steam Beta is not Windows7. big whoop.
