Why TF2 and not L4D2
QQ START

I'm not into competitive FPS. I was hoping for L4D2 but the devs opted to go for TF2. Purchased TF2 along with OrangeBox and never really played it. Tried to play it since it's the only source game on linux. Went through the tutorials and did some practice runs with bots. When I get onto the real thing I get: "That's the worst <insert class here> I've seen."

I'm a Dota player so I know how mean teammates can be. But in Dota there is a patience buffer which is so unlike TF2 where you immediately get trashed the moment you let the team down.

QQ END

So I really am not able to participate in the beta. I know there are other games but I'm not sure if they are worth the price.

I think the dev team would have a broader player and tester base if they opted for L4D2.

Actually L4D2 was first, there was a picture of a Valve employee playing it on Ubuntu.

But the reason TF2 is beacuse it's free I guess, more people can report bugs and etc. And if I'm not wrong L4D2 is on the closed BETA, after Steam leaves the BETA L4D2 will be avaliable to averyone

Just because it was started first doesn't mean that it's finished first (I don't think there's anything shown that indicates a complete port yet - the last thing I saw had messed up colours) ^_^

I haven't heard anything about there being any sort of external/closed L4D2 beta.

As for player bases, TF2 certainly wins out in numbers, given that it consistently ranks higher in the list of top games by total player count.

It seems to me that L4D2 would make a better launch title - TF2's definitely the best choice for an open beta.

Hopefully it won't be too long - I'm looking forward to playing L4D2 natively as well :D

There is a closed beta, which only 1000 people have acces. Even in this forum there is a closed beta section where only those with limited beta access can post (http://steamcommunity.com/app/221410/discussions/1/)

Yes, L4D2 was first but not the first to be ported, they're working with TF2 and L4D2 at the same time

Yeah, I sent hundreds of emails to them, but the closed beta is for more technical people they said, they wanna get rid of all minor bugs and then release it to the public

They did mention before (back when Valve was saying that they will have l4d2 on the beta) that owing l4d2 is not a requirement to participate in the beta. I'm guessing that means l4d2 would be free for the beta testers.

It was the Steam closed beta which initially had 1000 participants and was expanded several times. That phase is now over and that forum can be posted in by anybody so far as I can tell.

That doesn't indicate anything about a closed external L4D2 for Linux beta though.

It seemed to me that they were saying that owning L4D2 was not a requisite for participating in the Steam beta.

There is an open beta and a closed beta. I'm on the open beta, this means I have TF2 for free, and if I want more Linux games I'll have to buy them. On the closed beta you get all Linux games avaliable right now, so you can test them and report the bugs. Problem is 1000 people had the closed beta access in the begining, I don't know about this number right now but there IS a closed beta.

BTW: I can't post on the Limited Beta forums http://img692.imageshack.us/img692/5634/seleo001.png

There are no two betas. First they started out with 1000 people who did get a personal invitation email. I was one of them. This meant i could play TF2 and SS3. Later the closed beta was expanded to more people through additional invites. At one point Croteam took SS3 out of the closed beta, because the number of closed beta people was getting to large for a game that usually costs money. So from that point on in the closed beta you could only play TF2 and games you bought or owned thorugh the Humble Bundles. In december they simply opened steam up to everyone with TF2.

There is probably an internal beta for Valve and family and friends of employees for L4D2 but it's not part of the "closed beta" for Steam and it neve was.

Thanks for the update, t.jp. I thought there was still a closed beta were you get the ~27 games like Amnesia for testing, I saw a video like that last week.

So, what is the Limited beta forum for? Just for those who got the email invite?
blackout24 12 січ 2013 о 14:23
At first the Limited Beta Forum was hidden and only for closed beta participants. Later they made it visible to everyone but only closed beta people had write privileges. Even later they created other subforums.

Only games you own show up in your games list - people haven't been given free copies of Amnesia, etc.. Do you have games from the official list of supported titles that you can't install via the Linux client?

Ah, I didn't realise they hadn't opened up write access to everyone. I imagine that's because the bulk of bug reporting/actioning is happening via GitHub now.

There was quite something like this. I suppose I'm VERY out of date LOL

But here's my refference, after bypassing the beta invite the guy "owned" games he didn't have in "all games" tab

Part of it is also because it's easier to track bugs with a real bugtracker.

At some point people who bypassed the beta with "steam steam://open/games" also were allowed to install TF2 Beta at that point there was essentially no difference between being in the closed beta or not, expect for the write privileges. So making the beta public wasn't that big of a step.
