Remember that a lot of content is stored in files ending in .gfc within the SteamApps directory.

So much that a game like that suddenly requires me to download 12.2 gb? That does not seem right.

All those hats take space, bro.

That is the size of content used by the game. How does that not seem right?

Because it showed me that the game would be 4gb big when installed. And I remember when installing it on windows it took only like 2.4gb to download and the install was indeed 4gb.

it depends if you have other games that use that version of source, as it shares source data from the .gfc's previously mentioned (eg hl2 ep2, l4d2) so the reason it was quicker on windows was cause you had already downloaded the other 10gb for another game (or so i believe)

Yep its all down to the shared Source files.

The game most likely actually is 12 or so GB in size in this case.

Tried verifying game cache?
Tried re-downloading and then verifying game cache?
Sometimes after download it appears as 14GB but you gotta either enter the game or verify cache to fix that. Works with me

TF2 shares some data files with other Source Engine games, perhaps you had some other games already installed (at Windows). TF2 takes around 17GB at my drive atm (it creates around 2GB of cache files aswell I think plus some downloaded maps etc). And if you consider amount of hats and other items in game, that's pretty reasonable amount of space :)

Yep. This makes sense, as the backup I have for TF2 (Linux Version) is about 7 GiB, and that's compressed.
