No sound on openSUSE
Everything works fine for me, except the Sound on Steam - No microfone and no game-sound. It uses alsa and I'd like to know if someone got it to work with pulse?

openSUSE 12.2 64bit

"No sound"

"It seems that Ubuntu uses a different internal name for PulseAudio (pulse) and Valve currently assumes that is the default one. As a workaround start Steam with this terminal command:
SDL_AUDIODRIVER=pulseaudio steam"

I tried EVERYTHING, and truste me, nothing works. General system sounds (like on firefox) works great, but somehow on Steam no sound is avaliable, and that's the only thing that kept me from using openSUSE.

It's working fine for me using OpenSUSE 12.2, 64-bit, KDE. Have you installed all of your 32 bit libraries, the alsa 32 bit plugins, and libSDL?

I launch mine with "SDL_AUDIODRIVER=alsa steam" to get sound, some people use "pulse" or "pulseaudio" instead of the "alsa" part of that to get it to work.

I can only tell that for me, it is working.
Opensuse 12.2 64 bit.

I must start steam by typing on the commandline:
SDL_AUDIODRIVER=pulseaudio steam

It's posible though you are missing 32 bit libs.
I have added quit a few 32 bit libs to my open suse the last two weeks.

No garantees, but you can try install nspluginwrapper, not because of the program itself, but for the 32 libs youre package manager will add.

I have also installed some 32 libs I found searching in yast, for pulse audio.

The Steam client comes with all needed libraries on the .rpm, right? Except for those 32bit plugins. If I install all alsa plugins, is these commands still needed?

BTW, on Voice Chat I hear the person on the other line, but he/she hears an echo of themselves. Microphone doesn't work.

If you're using KDE you can set up the proper interface for your mic in multimedia-phonon-audio hardware setup-sound device. Set it for recording and try the different connector options.

Tried. No results.

I mean, what's wrong with suse that audio works with so many flaws? And not just me, but for lost of people. Having to setup scripts and run commands and install libraries - just for Steam to work-? I LOVE openSUSE but having to do so much just for the audio to work properly than I might think on using Ubuntu again.

I'll sure try it today.

So isn't there a way to make sound work properly without all these commands?

Where have you installed it from?
You need to remove it completely and then install it through opensuse's built in package manager YaST.
YaST already contains Steam and it is fully configured for opensuse already. Hopefully I can post links in here but here you go:

From http://software.opensuse.org/package/steam

The problem is with my audio and I think it's also in a whole picture. I'll try skyping someone today as well to see if all my audio (income and outcome) works good. If so, Steam is not ready yet to run well on suse.

You seem to forget that this stil a beta.
Steam is written for ubuntu, and now they are testing how well it runs on other distro's.

Beta basicly means, the program is about ready, but it has not been tested yet by users.
That is what we are doing right now.
