Steam for Linux

Steam for Linux

Linux, RO:Ostfront & Killing Floor
I am posting this post for people that are wondering to buy one of these games and want some information. This is my experience and I think that every steam linux user should have in mind these things.

These two games are from the same programmer: Tripware, so they share the same bugs. Here are some points:

* You will pay the same than for other platforms, but in linux you won't be able to play ANY the mods, so you pay the same for less product.

* Performance is a bit poor. I am aware I have a low-end computer, but I do have more FPS in ET:QW. This means that the requiremets are really higher than the exposed on the steam page.

* Graphic controls do not work (gamma, brightness, contrast). I have to use the command xgamma each time (before and after) I play any of these games.

* Suddenly, resolution combobox stop displaying resolutions (in both games) so I cannot change resolution from the interface.

* RO:Ostfront is getting old so you wont be able to play sometimes due to the lack of players.

* RO:Ostfront, although it is a game very realistic (most of the time), still has many bugs like hit errors and graphic glitches (at least on my computer).

* It is very common to have an error when entering a server or changing map: "An unknown Steam error is preventing you from connecting to this server. If the problem persists please contact Valve for support"

* Sometimes the steam process keeps running in backgroud and you cannot launch any game or the steam application itself, you have to kill it: kill $(pidof steam)

NOTE: I use an ATI APU (e-350) with updated catalyst drivers and xubuntu (64bit of course). Again, I know it is a low-end computer but I repeat that have better performance in games like ETQW or even some wine emulated games like Rome Total War.

I am able to play lots of mods from the workshop on Killing Floor. What sort of problems are you having with that?
""* You will pay the same than for other platforms, but in linux you won't be able to play ANY the mods, so you pay the same for less product.""
Darkest hours hasent been ported yet , but all RO mods work

"* Suddenly, resolution combobox stop displaying resolutions (in both games) so I cannot change resolution from the interface"
Cant say this happens to be in red orchestra

"* It is very common to have an error when entering a server or changing map: "An unknown Steam error is preventing you from connecting to this server. If the problem persists please contact Valve for support""

if you are refering to Red Orchestra , i get this problem in windows on a greater basic.ive seen it kick everybody in a server.

This info is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥!. just because you have problems then dont get it to sound like other people will have too!. i havent had any problems with killing floor with catalyst drivers everything works so far. if you have problems i will suggest you to send a bug report to the developers of the games and not spread the message of that you will get less for the same product on steam than on other platforms. or that the games dosent run probaly!.
Well, regarding the mods, when I installed RO two mods were installed: Darkest Hour Europe 44-45 and Mare nostrum. None of them work. When I installed KF, the mod Defence Alliance was installed and it doesnt work either.

The resolution bug happened to me using both RO and KF.

@ToTeX_Baked: Does your gamma controls work? Does Defence Alliance 2 work for you? What about the change resolution bug? As I posted this is only my experience, you are free to share your experience with us. It would be great if you could tell us if that things work for you. BTW, i've NEVER said that "the games doesn't run probably".

It is a fact that I payed the same than a user of other platform and I got less. I think that there would be a good idea for users to know that before they buy with wrong expectatives.

I can change resolutions just fine. Never had to do anything extra with gamma. Red Orchestra didn't give me the right resolution, but I could change it using the config file pretty easily.

Haven't tried installing the total conversion mods, but I've heard they don't work. There are plently of other mods that work fine (the ones in workshop and the maps for RO), so it's not all mods that don't work, just the total conversions on Steam. Be nice if those total conversions worked though.

Also, it might be good to post the experiences you had on Tripwire's forums, so they can see them and possibly fix them
Mare nostrum is dead as dead can be, i think they have even turned off the forums
Well, sorry, when I wrote "mods" I meant total conversion mods, in particular the ones that are installable with the games.

I know I can change the resolution from the config file, but it should work from the game menu. It woked at first but suddenly it stopped working.

It is really anoying to buy something and then have to go here and there to solve such basic fails like the gamma, brighness and contrast settings.

Anyway I only wanted to share my experience to other users. I think that the information I posted is helpful for other users and it is the information I would like to know before I bought those games to know exactly what are you paying for.

I only expected the games to work at least as good as other platforms as I am paying the same as other platform users. Is that such nonsense ???
Steam for Linux is still in beta status. Beta means "not finished". Yes you are paying the same as you would on other platforms, but by using beta software you agree to test something.

Looking further you have to see that on all PC based platforms games can have issues on your PC with your specific configuration. You can't blame it all on the game itself.

Why am I saying all this? I just don't think it is fair to put this out as a warning to others, because what you describe is so random without more information it is possible that this wouldn't happen to anyone else or maybe it would happen to a few or even a whole lotta people, but it is not specific for this game as long as we're talking about beta software.

I'm not saying this wouldn't be helpful as a bug report, though.
I'd say you pay the same on every platform for the same features. Because when you buy on Windows, you buy the option to play it on linux too and vice versa :)
I understand that Steam is in beta status, but not the games itself. In fact you can download TF2 or TF2 Beta, but RO and KF are not marked as beta. Anyway, if they were beta the point would be the same: why not indicated as so and why to pay the same than others pay for the sable version.

I posted this telling that this is my experience and some bugs are happening "at least on my computer". So why don't we make something useful from this post instead of just shooting the messenger? Besides, I've checked the most important errors before to make sure that they were not only because of my especific configuration.

- Any of the total conversion mods is working for anybody? (I searched the web and found that they don't)

- Do the gamma/brightness/contrast controls work for anybody? (I found references on the web that other people is having same problems)

- Does anybody have the same issue with the resolution combobox in KF or RO? (I found references in this same forum of people having this issue)

- Does anybody else had the steam process running in background ? (I also fount this bug on this forum)

The other reports I think they are just important to know.
* The RO error: "An unknown Steam error is preventing you from connecting to this server. If the problem persists please contact Valve for support" has been happening for years. It is also reported in this forum.
* The minor graphic glitches and hit problems seem to be well known in RO. In fact I found a funny video in youtube about the hit issue (I'll put the link here if I find it again).
* The lack of player in RO is also a fact.

I don't understant what is the problem with the posted information. You are presuming that it is happening only to me but I searched the web to find other pleople having the same problems. In fact, a little search on this forum will show most or all of the issues I talked about.

I must add that I did not posted this to disuade people from buying the games. I do not regret to have bought that games when you buy the games there is not a "known issues" title that should exist.

Well, you are right there :) But you know what I mean...
I've been trying to find a good place to speak about/to Tripwire Interactive. Unfortunately when I try to register on their official forums, my email provider is rejected. So I'm speaking here.

I just wanted to thank them for making their games available for Steam on Linux. I took a chance when buying Killing Floor, but now I enjoy it a lot! I hope they will continue to provide support for those experiencing issues. And I hope too they will continue to release their games for Linux through Steam. Thanks!
RO:Ostfront do have some rather nasty glitches like sniper scopes that can't be used, guns that don't render etc. The game is still available for sale, and the developer is active, so they should support it. If they don't plan to fix it, maybe we should receive a Steam Wallet Code or similar compensation?
I also have a lot of issues - invisible scope on high details, extreme lags in outdoor maps, graphics glitches, !!!!!TERRIBLE!!!!!! performance.
I also still don't understand, why is there a DirectX option in graphics settings - I tried it (just for fun) and game didn't started - I had to delete content and download it again.

Btw. Dwarfs?! running on Mono and look at the garbage of WIndows DLLs and EXEs etc.. in every Tripwire's game... my thread: http://steamcommunity.com/app/221410/discussions/0/864959336422218658/
