Steam Linux and Wine Linux on the same installation?
If you have Steam (native) LInux on an installation, can you also install Steam under Wine in the same operating system?

I have Steam (native) Linux under OpenSUSE right now, and would like to also install Steam under Wine to play non-Linux Source games.

Yeah, it's completley possible. I've got native steam and then another through PlayOnLinux. Way easier than dualbooting IMO, at least for the games that do work properly with Wine.

Thanks flame, that's what I needed to know.

Installed Steam under Wine just fine, so now I've got both of 'em.

The only thing to remember is that you can't have them both opened at the same time.

Does Steam run well under Wine? Like what is able to run without issues?

Steam works great, as do Source games. Other games are hit and miss, depending on whether they work under Wine or not.

http://appdb.winehq.org/

go here and search for a game, I’ve found this very useful, as well as solution for technical issues

I currently am playing these games perfectly (only tested these games)

Bioshock (not 2... shame)
Black Mesa (so I guess all source mods)
CS:GO
Doom3 & roe
Skyrim
Hl2,ep1.ep2
l4d2
Portal 2
RAGE (weirdly I find the pop in better under Linux)
CIV V
Worms Revolution

(couldn't get max payne 3 to work)

all the games mentioned I have working with the steam overlay (took some configuring of wine)

my specs (briefly of what matters) i5 2500k, 8gb ram, gtx570 soc

no matter what game, I get some stuttering for first 15 seconds, then usually smooth. but I should mention that all the games (except source games) i've installed by using symbolic links to my windows steam partition.

I'm also using playonlinux. and Ubuntu 12.04.

edit... I should say by "perfectly" I mean with graphics quite highly set, not much I’ve had to sacrifice compared to my windows settings, maybe from x16aa/af to now x4, but I feel a lot happier using Linux for games than having to OS jump all day when I wanna play a game

Tarron, could you please share your Wine config specs with me as to how you got Skyrim working? I've been wrestling with it since December. Got it running perfectly at one point except menu navigation (preventing me from creating a character, or modifying settings outside of the game's .ini files).

A few other Steam games that I've got running mostly flawlessly in Wine:
Beat Hazard
Civilization V
Neverwinter Nights 2
Scribblenauts Unlimited
The Walking Dead
Jurassic Park: The Game
Back To The Future: The Game

Tried making a new install with POL with the settings you mentioned... still no luck. I've looked around a bunch on the WineHQ site as well. Mouse input on menus just doesn't work on my laptop. Thanks anyway.
