Will counter-strike source be ported to linux?
Currently Counter-strike source is -75% discount, so it's tempting to buy it. But I don't have windows PC anymore, so I would like to play it on Linux. Since TF2 works perfectly and it's the same engine than hl2/cs-source, it shouldn't be hard to port them, right? Did Valve made any announce regarding that?

its safe to say it will because its a valve game. valve is really pushing for this and its safe to assume any/all games made by valve or that are on the source engine will be ported. but i would say wait on buying the game cause it does go on sale often, and it will be 75% off again in the spring time most likely. so by then they may have it ready for linux. as i've stated on another post by someone else I intend on getting a patition and having people sign it, and emailing it to all major game dev's and letting them know linux is a viable market for them.

I'm pretty sure all valve games will be ported, for free. Just re-download them.

Maybe the engine is named the same in hl2, CS:S, and TF2, but TF2 has a different engine from CS:S and the other games with Orange Box version of Source. Nonetheless, they shouldn't be any harder to port than TF2.

L4D2 is currently in internal beta (just read it in a news article). I'm sure the other games will follow (except for GoldSrc).

I actually bought L4D2 and CS: GO (The only Valve games I didn't already have) this sale in anticipation of valve releasing it soon on Linux. I wish they would give a time frame on when they will release these games.

I think it is a good bet that CS:S will be ported as it is one of the most popular Source games. I do not think all Valve games will be ported as some have stated above. There are many Valve games that have not been ported to Mac. I think the best indicator that a game is likely to be ported is if it is a Valve game that is also a "Steamplay" game meaning it is available on both Windows and Mac. That pretty much rules out HL1 and its derivatives (Goldsrc games.) I don't think they will spend any time porting those games. HL2 and the episodes, L4D1+2, Portal, CS:S are all games that were ported to Mac.

I'm still curious why they didn't port HL1: Source to Mac - but still I'm very certain HL2 and other Steamplay games will be ported. I also remember having read something like that on Phoronix...

Was L4D1 also Source? If so, it'll probably be ported as well, right? Which means I should buy it now while it's on sale, right???

L4D is in Source, yes.

I'm quite sure they'll port CS:global Offensive, but CS:Source... i really can't say it.
BTW, u can also play the windows version using wine, it should work well.

Sure we can. But me (as the vast majority of Brazil players and trhoughout the world) play competitive. Easyanticheat does not work with wine, it loads and opens normally, but it's function (scan processes for cheats, scan Steam folders) don't work, so you're kicked from the server.

CSS I think will be ported, because it uses Source engine. 1.6 I'm pretty sure will not be ported. But the funny thing is: 1.6 is the counter strike that mostly gives valve money. People cheat, get caught by easyanticheat and have to buy a new 1.6. All ID's on VACbanned go to EAC's list, which means more money in valve's bank. I just don't know for sure, but at least on MAC CS 1.6 is not ported.

Trust me, if 1.6 gave more money to valve, they would support it better.
