Can't start Steam

I did it through the ubuntu software center and then it came up with a window to "Start Steam Beta". Once I clicked on that it updated Steam and that was it. So, how do you get to the log in screen of Steam? I click on Steam but nothing happens.

I am a Linux geek so I can at least GUIDE you!

When something doesn't start, then you run it from the terminal to see what's going wrong.

I don't have Steam installed, so for now, at least type a few letters like;

ste

and hit the tab key and see what it shows you and figure out what to type, hopefully it's just as simple as "steam"

At me here that gives the terminal at startup Steam:

Try to run it with administrator privileges the first time. It should create a copy on your home directory, then run it normally.
From the terminal:
sudo steam
then close (do no install anything), rerun steam and try again (if it fail try to look the steam.sh in your home/Steam directory.

Try this from shell too:

LANG=C /home/$USER/Steam/steam.sh 'steam://open/games'

#or this

LANG=C /home/$USER/.local/share/Steam/steam.sh 'steam://open/games'

LANG=C will produce English error messages, so more people can read them.

The error I am getting is this when I try to start Steam from CLI.

I'm not an linux expert, but I've had this issue when I was using kernel 3.6.7 after I tryed to update my grafic driver. After I downloaded an older version (thought the update manager in Ubuntu) that problem is gone.

Agan, I'm not an expert, but changing the kernel worked for me (of course I installed the kernel 3.6.7 manualy, so I must've missed something)

What? Really? Why hasn't anyone told me that!
Do i need to run it as root to update it then?

This happened to me, and as far as I can tell it is because the process/program is still running in the background. To fix it:

1) Open up System Monitor (gnome-system-monitor)
2) Click on the Processes tab
3) There are two Steam related threads one called steam.sh and another called MainThrd
4) End the MainThrd process, this in turn will close the steam.sh process

After this you should be able to click on the steam icon or run it from the command line as normal.
