Serious Sam 3 is fully playable

I read many topic where peoples say that Serious Sam 3 very slow or similar, so I tested on my system:

OS: Archlinux x64
Desktop: KDE 4.9.3

Processor: AMD Athlon x2 5000+ 2.6GHz
Videocard: ATI 5670 1GB (Driver: 12.11 Beta 8)
Ram: 4GB

Result:
Running like on Windows 7 in fullscreen, but sometimes in window mode the FPS drop down to ~10. On Ubuntu 12.04 with same driver TF2 and SS3 running very badly (10-15FPS). I think the Unity is not the recommended desktop for gaming.

SS3 works fine when it works. Sometimes it starts and plays for me just fine, other times the game world is all jumbled up with weird-♥♥♥ polygons all around me. One time the game started minimized and did not want to unminimize itself, I had to kill it.

This on KDE 4.8.4, on Debian Wheezy.

Works great for me so far.

Sometimes it feels a bit choppy and kinda like some sort of "performance drop" during cinematics.

Running Arch Linux 64bit with KDE 4.9.3 as well and the game runs like a champ, I'm pretty impressed.

maybe your right, but the Catalyst driver really sux with Gnome/Unity and I have better performance on any other desktop environments

Can you please try the public beta version of the game and see if your problems are fixed.

Then don't blame Unity, but your graphics card drivers.

Unity is not recommended for Gaming, it still has a lot of problems related to OpenGL performance, about 10% or 15% less FPS ingame than other DE like KDE.

There are a lot of benchmarks comparisos and even Canonical talk about this problem in the last UDS. They are working on it but they doesn't solved yet.

However, graphic driver are more important than the DE, especially with AMD graphic cards

• Make sure you're in the public beta (publicly available).
  
• Enable the performance CPU frequency scaling governor, or very slightly better disable CPU frequency scaling option in your BIOS (Cool'N'Quiet or Speedstep or Powernow).
  
• Turn off VSync (everywhere, sometimes turning it on then off again in SS3 will make it turn off).
  
• (EDIT) Enable Undirect Fullscreen Windows if using Unity (or Compiz) - install CompizConfig Settings Manager if you don't have it then enable this setting under General->Composite.

To enable the performance scaling governor you can try:

sudo cpupower frequency-set -g performance

Or use the indicator applet.

I'm surprised how well it runs on my laptop - Compaq Presario CQ56, Processor AMD Athlon II P320 Dual-Core, Memory 2.7GB, Running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with VESA: RS880M graphics driver (laptop doesn't seem to like the proprietry drivers for the Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series graphics card). Other than a bit of slowdown when there are a lot of enemies on screen I haven't had any troubles at all so far

well, to be honest im having like 12-17fps on my system using the nvidia accelerated graphics driver v310. I think those drivers are wrong orso because killingfloor is bugging on me too, have to g et into that later :)

All setting set to Ultra.
Some time, I have lag spike(~18FPS) when the game load new animation or texture I think.

EDIT : Recently, I reach average 70 FPS. Maybe because of the last update or the map have less object in last level.

I get close to constant 60FPS with V-Sync and Triple Buffering enabled with some stuttering here and there (typical of Source engine in my experience). All settings set to 'Ultra'. Only one scene near the beginning of the game dropped to around 40fps, but haven't seen that happen since. Very enjoyable game BTW.

I don't drop below 30 fps on Kubuntu 12.10 / Radeon HD 5800 12.10 / Phenom II X4 965
CPU on Ultra, Graphics on High (on Ultra fps drops to 2.5-5)

Though on Win i have Graphics on Ultra and it stays on 20 fps. I think performance increased with a small SeriousSam update yesterday...
