I'm using Unity and I don't have any type of tray icon. I wonder if I'm supposed to have one....

i had one before the last update, but then after the update, it was no longer there.
Yeah, I was just thinking that. My 'close' and 'minimize' buttons are both just minimizing the window to the unity bar, not closing it to <whatever unity call the system tray>
Sure it is not necessary since it has an icon in the launcher.
Even though I got none.
The best solution would be 'close button closes steam' approach instead of hiding it from user forever if they haven't got unity applet bar.
If I'm right there are some problems with it on 64 bit systems. Those who can't see it- are you running 32 or 64?
