I am not either. Using Arch with Awesome WM. Additionally, the windows won't close, even if I click on the X(not sure what happens if I use my WM's close window command, will test tonight). They just stay at the top as if they were minimized, but they won't reopen.
That's because Steam only has got a tray icon on Unity until now.

I get that same thing and sometimes the window wont show up but notifications from steam will in gnome.

I'm using Unity and I don't have any type of tray icon. I wonder if I'm supposed to have one....

I don't get a systray icon in Ubuntu 12.10 with Unity

It's because SfL was targetted at default Ubuntu/Unity, Unity doesn't so much need a system tray because it pins apps to the "task bar" (the sidebar launcher dock). I think a tray icon would still be useful for Unity, but it's necessary for other desktop environments. It'll come, it's just not something that was implemented for the Ubuntu beta.

Yeah, I was just thinking that. My 'close' and 'minimize' buttons are both just minimizing the window to the unity bar, not closing it to <whatever unity call the system tray>
Same here, you can use "steam steam://nav/games" to open the main steam window if you lost it. Which begs the question, is there a steam api to hook into? Writing a tray icon then wouldn't be that hard.
strange the tray icon works for me ..ubunto 12.10 64 bit
I also got no tray icon in ubuntu 12.10 64 bit.
Sure it is not necessary since it has an icon in the launcher.
Even though I got none.
Unity and Gnome 3 are trying to get rid of the system tray. Even Microsoft is trying to get rid of it (he says knowing absolutely nothing about Windows 8 :D ).

It's not a tray icon, it's an applet bar icon.

The best solution would be 'close button closes steam' approach instead of hiding it from user forever if they haven't got unity applet bar.
I get icon fine in XFCE, but it's not a tray icon, but an indicator.

If I'm right there are some problems with it on 64 bit systems. Those who can't see it- are you running 32 or 64?
