Steam not running on Ubuntu

It worked fine after install yesterday, but today decides it won't open. Running it in Terminal gives me the following message:

But you need to have opengl installed. From ati or from mesa3d. I assume you have ati...

You are a complete idiot. Ubuntu is the most userfriendly distribution out there, and it's even the only distribution that is officialy supported by Valve. Go troll somewhere else.

I just can't get what namely could be disgracing in Ubuntu?? Unity DE?? Package manager? Default wallpaper, finaly??? (until this absurd)
I've used many distros and all they may differ one from another are only by default DE and set of preinstalled programs (+ own repos and packaging methods).

I have used Linux and BSD for years, you say that it is the most user friendly? That used to be true back when it was stable (8.x). You are a complete fool if you're going to sit here and tell me that Ubuntu even an acceptable distribution of Linux. It is the buggiest out of all the mainstream distributions. And for a user friendly system, it is incredibly unstable. I'm talking from a system admin's point of view, not the prospective of a typical Ubuntu home user who plays tunes, browses facebook and plays some games. I've used probably around ten Ubuntu boxes from 7.10 to 12.x and yet during that time I have had more trouble dealing with the system itself than I ever had on the hundred boxes of FreeBSD and Debian builds and yet they were more than capable to do everything Ubuntu could. If you want a GUI because you're not comfortable with WM's then you could stick one on in a matter of minutes. If you wanted games to play effeciently you'd install the closed source drivers exactly the same as you would in Ubuntu through the terminal. (Debian that is) When it comes to BSD it's a different matter. I have installed Steam on Debian Wheezy, Crunchbang, Ubuntu and Mint. Ubuntu was the one with the poorest performance, I had to overclock the card and switch to a WM just so I could get the same balance that was restored when attempting the same thing on Mint and better still on Debian Wheezy. On a side note Ubuntu also comes with a load of bloatware. Unity anyone?

It is the distribution supported by Valve because of it's userbase, all the idiots go for Ubuntu because they think it'll make them hackers and it's the easiest to use so typically that and Mint are usually the first choice. I'm not saying Ubuntu and Mint users are idiots, I'm saying that the majority of you don't even know what your system is actually running on, the Linux kernel. Evenso Steam may "officially" support Ubuntu just like they support every other Debian based Linux distribution, the page actually states that Ubuntu is it's own operating system, which is incorrect.

So instead of getting butthurt by my post because you're another one of those Ubuntu users that hasn't any experience whatsoever why don't you just live your life. You will enjoy life much more if you stop picking an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ arguement based on your self opinionated facts from every banter joke. You're statement about Ubuntu makes me wonder whether or not you are in fact trolling.

The rest of you taking the piss because my banter has offended, chill the ♥♥♥♥ out. If you really want to know every detail on why the Ubuntu distribution is poorly engineered in comparison to other mainstream distributions then send me a message and I'll happily give you a quick history lesson.

Oh really? I've used OpenSUSE with KDE Plasma (was 4.6 that time), there were crashes at least 1 time per 10 minutes. But anyway no critical errors,.. same as on Unity (I don't like Unity, by the way, using ElementaryOS instead with own Pantheon DE on gala/mutter WM, but it still based on Ubuntu). Moreover, since you will turn off the Apport error reporting service I bet you will never notice any of errors. As about performance - since we compare distributions that using same Linux kernel version and same drivers for graphics card you will never notice any significant differences.
I've tried to do some comparative tests on my two computers toying with Arch + E17, OpenSUSE + KDE and Gnome, Ubuntu 12.04 and latest 13.04 (with Unity and with Gnome Fallback Mode, and with apart X sessions), Mint 14 Cinnamon and Mate editions, ElementaryOS itself, none of them didn't prevail somehow above another.

Mint is based on Ubuntu, and it's much better for beginners. Ubuntu is based on Debian, but is nothing alike. The Mac is based upon the UNIX kernel, as is Windows and Linux. And as you can see they're not alike at all. If Ubuntu had only enherited Debian and provided a friendly user interface, then it'd be perfect. That already exists though, it's called Crunchbang.

Can y'all quit whining about the banter joke, I'd like to see the OP fix his issue before he kills himself reading through all these responses not to find a single solution.

Was it the early KDE build? I've never bothered with KDE because I find visual effects rather irritating. The reason Wheezy managed to outperform Ubuntu LTS is because of the bloated crap that came with it out of the box. That's my theory anyway, I had to overclock the GPU on Ubuntu once stripped down just to get the same performance with Wheezy. (I also despise unity)

I dunno, I had repetitive errors (segfault and crashes of KNetworkManager) with KDE Plasma all the way, when I installed it on my computers, until version 4.10 though.
... Soon I will try to test Wheezy to measure its performance.
