Steampipe not working on TF2 and linux
Hey guys i have Arch linux installed on my Laptop (M17X R3) and have tf2 all installed, i was getting annoyed at map load times so decided to upgrade to steampipe early. But once i did i could no longer get tf2 to load custom huds or the cfg from the common/team fortress2/custom/userstuff/resource..... another issue i have is that i cannot turn off steam cloud sync and so i always have to write my cfg file to userdata any help on this would be great and i am really at a loss.

I just tried it.

It doesn't seem to make any difference to the long wait for the menu to pop up.

If I use quickplay it tells me I need a game update

If I verify the game it says everything is ok (and steam doesn't download any update)

If I load (some) maps it segfaults :-

e.g ctf_2fort :-

#0 0xf62dce01 in ?? () from /home/michael/Steam/SteamApps/common/Team Fortress 2/bin/filesystem_stdio.so
#1 0xf62dd0f8 in ?? () from /home/michael/Steam/SteamApps/common/Team Fortress 2/bin/filesystem_stdio.so
#2 0xf62b854b in ?? () from /home/michael/Steam/SteamApps/common/Team Fortress 2/bin/filesystem_stdio.so
#3 0xf62bfe4f in ?? () from /home/michael/Steam/SteamApps/common/Team Fortress 2/bin/filesystem_stdio.so

So, not sure if these are problems with the beta or just something screwed with my install.
The windows version doesn't seem to have these problems though (although I haven't tried quickplay)

I managed to get tr_walkway_rc2 to load, and given that performance on AMD is no better I don't see much point reinstalling to see if that can fix any of the above...I'll try again after the 30th.

I dont have got such problems but i dont use any addons. I just used TF2 for benchmarks and with the steampipe setting it still loads very slow compared to KF/SS3. Lets see how fast/slow L4D2 loads...
It's all working for me under Mint 14 Nadia Cinnamon 64. Except for MvM, but that's on Valve's part.
Its such a pain it was the same on ubuntu is there a command to stop steam sync? like cl_syncecloud 0 or something? if i could add that to the cfg in userdata i think it might turn it off and let me use custom files.
Hmm, managed to get rid of the crashes by deleting everything bar the new vpk files and verifying.

Presumably the crash was related to the movie that (sometimes) plays when you start a map and hit continue, because hitting continue was triggering it and it didn't crash for tr_walkway_rc2.

Awful performance with Catalyst 13.4 for some reason (20fps) same stuttering and lag throughout the game with 13.3 beta 3. Huge wait before the menu first appears when starting the game hasn't improved.

After all that I didn't really notice whether the first map loaded quicker or not. Perhaps it did.
I suppose it's not just about improving performance or the linux version, but there's a heap of work for someone to do before this title is ready for release.

Which DE/WM are you using? that fps is very low, the wait times are long on linux but i did notice a huge difference on all source games that use steampipe CS:S is crazy fast to how it was when i first started playing it in 2006 TF2 is all i need now :) someone please come up with a solution to get my custom files to work in linux :)

The low FPS in 13.4 must be some bug in 13.4 - it doesn't improve with a different DE/WM and there are "apl initialize fail" errors in dmesg suggesting the driver itself is buggy and perhaps the HL2 profile isn't being used? Just a guess.

I don't think AMD have ever released a "release driver" that works, so it's expected. Perhaps 13.5 beta will work again.

I've used both unity and xfce4. (Although right now xfce4 crashes back to the login screen every few minutes in ubuntu raring adding to the farce)

The FPS is higher with 13.3 beta 3, but the game is still unplayable.

TBH, my solution is just going to be to keep and use windows 7 for as long as I can. After that whatever I buy it won't be anything that has anything to do with either Valve or AMD - but I suppose that precludes the Xbox, the PS4, the Steam box and much of PC gaming.

I think I'll find a new hobby and throw money at that instead.

How long your loading times are? Mine 15-30s after Steampipe conversion.
/dev/sda: Timing buffered disk reads: 344 MB in 3.01 seconds = 114.10 MB/sec
Sorted a work around for my cfg basicly i have put my binds, alias, fps, autoexec in my regular cfg so far that works and now ill just have to use regualr minmode hud till steam release a fix ahh well
Steampipe does huge difference in loading times of game and maps for me. It used to be up to 3min to load a map, now I'm usually first at new map. Whole map change up from "server changing map" info takes around 15sec (I got standard SATA drive). However there are still few issues, like random crash after clicking continue or not working MvM :/ I hope it all get fixed when TF2 steampipe is out of beta.
I have switched to SteamPipe this morning and had no problems. My loading time is now ~2-3 minutes (~4-5 minutes before).

Oh, so that's the problem! I have switched 2 days ago to AMD 13.4 and my TF2 performance is now horrible (60fps to 20-30fps). I was trying to find out where the problem is ... I'll switch back to 13.3 Beta 3.
I deleted each folder less than 200MB in size under TF2 root folder (including subfolders) and it solved my problem. Had to download some 400-500MB new stuff in total, but now the game works.
