This is a good news for Linux at large especially given that MS made heavy investment in Dell!
Where are there essential differencies? Other kernel? Unity desktop (which you can replace onto your favorite anytime)? Planning to use Mir and not X or Wayland?.. ))
That's true at the moment. Still, that Mir stuff is quite disturbing. The change is planned because of mobile devices, not desktop computers. The emphasis is on touch screens, just like in windows 8.
I swear some people will just rail against whatever is popular, envisioning themselves as a member of an elite club because they use an obscure distribution of a niche operating system.
Alienware have likely chosen Ubuntu because that's what the vast majority of Linux desktop users run on their machines. For good reason as well, in comparison to pretty much every other distro it's incredibly friendly to new users. It's also the only distro that has a backer who actively spends money to make Linux more suitable for everyday desktop users. Fedora is a testbed for RHEL which along with SUSE is aimed at corporate workstations, not home users.
There are many great distros out there for those of us who like to have extremely granular control over our operating system, which is why we use them instead of Ubuntu. There are many people on these forums who need to stop pretending that we are typical users though, because we're not. Most users don't want to compile their own kernels, don't care whether their UI is written in C, Qt or Javascript and don't want to have to weigh up the pros and cons of ALSA and Pulse. They just want something that is stable and works with the least amount of configuration. This isn't bad, it doesn't mean they're stupid and we shouldn't mock them because of it. It just means that their interests involve the use of computers, they are simply a means to an end, whereas for us our interests are the computers themselves.

That isn't a bad thing in it's self. It's all about how it is implemented and if it works well. IMHO Windows 8 doesn't on the desktop.
Also Ubuntu is likely picked for 3 reasons. 1) It has corporate support, 2) they are desktop focused , & 3 it has the largest user base.
Although, Redhat and Suse also have corporate sponsors they are not really focused on the end user desktop but more server side/work station.
Ok, while you've started to use proprietary nVidia or ATI drivers and restricted codecs, you've been converted into a betrayer ))) Agreed?

2.. have you noticed you're on steam? the proprietry digital delivery service? if you have a problem with proprietry and really must preach you could at least have some convictions and stick to them.
anyway...it's good to see ubuntu on a box that wouldn't look out of place under my television.
