I gues it would be easy now for steam to port this two games to linux. Both aviable in steam for windows and mac at the moment.

Yes, I suppose they could - though that's not exactly Valve's job, is it?

The good news is that a team has already started on making an 'OpenJK (https://github.com/Razish/OpenJK )', which would let you play Jedi Academy natively on linux.

The question on my mind is would it be possible to get valve to allow the community to take over maintenance? Then it could be updated to have the Linux version that should be coming soon.

I don't think it is up to Valve to allow that, but rather Activision and Raven, for the rare case where some one doesn't own those games (or simply to show support) some Steam (for Linux or otherwise) folks might buy those games... In which case would they give the maintainers the share from Activision/Raven, or should it be split in three, as the assets aren't open ;-)
