10 FPS in source games, ubuntu 12.10, open source ati driver, 4200 hd
Is that about right or am I missing something?
Same with these drivers:

System is AMD dual core with integrated 4200 and 4 GB RAM (512 shared w video).

Well, that is a 6 year old CPU with a bad integrated graphics chip... i would have not even expected 10 fps, more like 1-2 ;)

You probably wouldn't get much more even under windows with a 4200. Especially if you're talking about TF2 which is slow on today's high-end hardware as well. Just look around how many people complain about it.

"To support this PPA with a Paypal donation" wtf?

you only option for optimal gameplay will be with the fglrx drivers. i played source games with wine on a ati 3450m back on my old laptop some years ago. so you should have no problem with the fglrx drivers.

Thanks - I wasn't sure what to expect. Some people seem to be having good luck with the free radeon drivers but it seems like only on beefier cards.
This integrated card works great in Windows, source games like HL2 and Portal (haven't tried TF2) run fine with good settings.

Unfortunately with ubuntu 12.10 or 12.04 I cant use fglrx or the installer from AMD because this card is 'legacy' (the closed drivers only work w xserver 1.12 and ubuntu is using 1.13).

So it looks like I can either wait for AMD to update the legacy driver, wait for the free driver to get better (:-)), or tweak the distro/use another with a compatible xserver.

YAY

fglrx >12.10 is compatible with 1.13 xserver. Just use an actual driver and it works

My chipset isnt support with that though.

See note on bottom:
Automated installer and Display Drivers for Xorg 6.9 to Xserver 1.12 and Kernel version up to 3.4

I'm not the only one stuck in this position.

Oh i forgot that the newer drivers dont support such old cards anymore.
Time for a new computer then id guess ;)

that PPA could work indeed, but note that its downgrading your xserver to 1.12 which you could also down by yourself

yea and patching the driver to work with the kernel. id rather he do that for me!

Radeon, unfortunately, is rubbish at 3D graphics. It sucks to sell thy soul to the devil, but you're probably going to want to go ahead and install Catalyst.

Which games? TF2 is like 15 fps on lowest settings for me, but hl2dm is 25-30 at near-max settings. I am also using mesa.

Just testet HL2 Deatmatch here i got a ATI 4250 slightly overclocked with a singlecore cpu and open drivers. Just had to turn off HDR, Motion Blur and shader quality then the game runs like a charme in 1920X1200. Maybe i test some other resolutions if you want me to.
