Pre-order games if they will have linux port click
Hello!
Is it possible to create some kind of icon/section for all games where linux users can pre-order a game if it comes out for linux with some goal to reach? So developers could have funds for linux porting and a realistic number of linux users who would buy the game. And if the game won't come out for linux platform, so the funds will not be transfered to the software house.

I mean for class A games, for souftwarehouses like BIStudio, ID Software, Infinity Ward, Microprose etc.

Something like this would be nice, because there isn't any way how to ask developers for a Linux support or how to show them our interest.
I would buy a lot of games but I can't - I won't pay for ignoring my platform.

The fact is that the big ones only look for profits. Online petitions don't bring them money, neither discussions like this one, but I'm sure that if they see a pot of secure pre-orders that will be only given if the game will be ported on linux, this will be used.

If the SteamBox comes out, buy one. If they manage to sell enough, big games will come for sure.

I hope so, it will be hard for Valve to compete with the PS4 and the next Xbox tho. Sony and Microsoft sell their consoles at a loss, Valve won't do this.
Let's hope being a very open platform and being able to run anything from a full web browser to a video editor will be a big enough selling point.

I did it in past with some games, because softwarehouses promised it will come for linux soon (remember UT3, Rage). There are other examples where developers promised map editors and mod editors (OT). I swore to myself that I will buy a game only if it will have what I want and I will never more trust in promises (i.e. linux port will come soon, map editor is in progress, some DLC will be a gift...). Customers do the same with petitions: they promise to buy a game for some conditions and when it's time to pay they crack it.
For my opinion a "cash out if it will come out for linux click" would be a strong signal to increase linux porting, so customers would definitely buy the game and the softwarehouses are forced to port it if they want the money.

Since linux games won't be limited to Steam Box I wouldn't give much importance to sales, OS surveys are probably the ones to look at. After all, what companies can claim to have games that run and are played on their console technology before the console is even sold? ;)

I like that idea. If producers see an amount of cash they get for sure if the games is ported, it might help...

Yes, that would be very good

also it should work with other system such as mac OS (and windows).

yeah, unreal 2.5. in no way shape or form reflective of UE3 ports.
PyGuy 2013年3月21日下午5:53
That would be pretty sweet! As opposed to having companies doubt Linux as a viable platform, the results would be right there in their face. Whenever a cool new project surfaces for Linux, the userbase clings on and is usually very generous with funding it and/or contributing.

Not sure why this came up, but while Killing Floor may be Unreal 2.5, Dungeon Defenders which has a Linux port in a Humble Bundle, is UE3 based.
