Steam for Linux

Steam crashes on launch (even after I purged the .steam/steam directory and reinstalled!)
So I've been unable to launch steam lately. I purged the .steam/steam directory (this is just a symlink to .local/share/Steam), and reinstalled. Still can't get it to launch. When i try to start it up, steam appears for like .1 seconds and then crashes. Launching from the terminal, I get this:

relevant part:

[0313/] Destroying invalid entry.
/home/yanom/.local/share/Steam/ line 700: 7368 Segmentation fault (core dumped) $STEAM_DEBUGGER "$STEAMROOT/$PLATFORM/$STEAMEXE" "$@"

anyone know what's up? How do I fix this? I'm on 64-bit ubuntu by the way.

Looking up that error sent me here[], looks like you'll have to make a bug report to Valve, sorry :\

There seems to be a patch here[] posted by 'slouken' that fixes the problem for people but I can't promise it's effectiveness.

What linux / kernel / graphics card / driver are you using ?
yanom Mar 24, 2013 @ 3:35pm
kernel 3.5.0-26-generic
graphics card: AMD Radeon HD 6800 Series
graphics driver: AMD-sourced proprietary Catalyst driver 11.8

uninstall the amd driver and install 13.1 or 13.3 beta
just to clarify, did you delete only "~/.steam" directory or the ".local/share/steam" directory too ? If only the first delete the whole .local/share/steam directory (except SteamApps if you like to keep games)

It's /home/yourname/.local/...
I fixed this issue! I was having the same problem related to Skyrim. The mods make the saved games too large and causes Steam to crash.

Delete all of your saves to your recycle bin (after saving a copy). Run steam and disable cloud features for skyrim OR ALL games. Open your recycle bin, and restore all of your saved game files.

Then Play! If you use multiple computers you'll have to move your saved files manually which are store in C:\Users\YourProfileName\My Documents\My Games\Skyrim\saves
