Poor TF2 performance on Ubuntu 13.10
This is probably just a problem with my config so don't be too nervous about upgrading to 13.10.

I have a core i7 2600k

8 gig ram

AMD HD 5870

I'm running the proprietary amd drivers installed through the system settings. Any ideas why my game is stuttering like I'm trying to run it on a Voodoo 2?

I don't think this is a config problem. I have it too, after a few minutes my frames drop from 200 to 10.

It might be the case where a config could result in a regular performance, but certainly the config will only tell that something is wrong with the Linux port.

Try to create a config with the content bellow, and see if it helps

I'm having this issue as well. Restarting Unity seems to fix the problem temporarily, but this step is required every time after the first run of TF2. I've posted the issue I was having here as wel: http://steamcommunity.com/discussions/forum/11/558751179402806147/
