OpenGL GLX Failure on Linux Mint 14 with NVIDIA GT 520
I've been using Steam to play DOTA 2 on my Linux Mint 14 64bit box with my GT 520 but today it suddenly stopped working. Whenever I try to launch DOTA I get the following message:

OpenGL GLX context is not using direct rendering, which may cause performance problems

and I'm giving the following unhelpful link: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=9938-EYZB-7457

I'm running the NVIDIA drivers as managed by the Software Sources tool in Mint 14. Worked fine before this. The NVIDIA X Server Tools util says I'm running NVIDIA Driver Version 304.88 and X Server Version 11. The OpenGL/GLX Information tab has the following contents:

GLX Information:
Direct Rendering: Yes
GLX Extensions:
GLX_EXT_visual_info
GLX_EXT_visual_rating
GLX_SGIX_fbconfig
GLX_SGIX_pbuffer
GLX_SGI_video_sync
GLX_SGI_swap_control
GLX_EXT_swap_control
GLX_EXT_swap_control_tear
GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap
GLX_ARB_create_context
GLX_ARB_create_context_profile
GLX_EXT_create_context_es2_profile
GLX_ARB_create_context_robustness
GLX_ARB_multisample
GLX_NV_float_buffer
GLX_ARB_fbconfig_float
GLX_EXT_framebuffer_sRGB
GLX_NV_multisample_coverage
GLX_ARB_get_proc_address

.
. Lots of uninteresting GL stuff etc
.

OpenGL Information:
Version: 4.2.0 NVIDIA 304.88

I'm not that familiar with the video card issues on Linux so please let me know what other information may be useful for debugging this, and let me know if you know a solution!

304.88 is way out of date hmm but if i was you i look for broken packages or reinstall your drivers do you have synaptic installed?
Don't forget to install 32bit libraries, too. Should be explained within your distributions's 64Bit video drivers installation instructions.
i had more or less the same thing happening, you might want to check out my post in another thread that explains how i fixed it
Thanks all! After playing with drivers for awhile I eventually got it working but then it locked up during DOTA and I couldn't get it back again. I ended up deciding I wanted to wipe that machine anyway and give 13.10 a try so I did that before I saw measlyWeasel's post. Thanks for the info, I've cross posted it in two other locations so hopefully it's easy for others with this problem to find it and give the sym link solution a try:
