Hehe, stable Debian is a far better choice.
But 500Gb HDD looks kinda large... Maybe they counted all games too.
Code repo still doesn't work, though. UPD. Now it works.
SteamOSInstaller.zip is 960Mb. What the hell they put there, mustbe all Linux games as a gift...
Intel or AMD 64-bit capable processor
Why? Steam is not 32-bit anymore?

It always have could have been be (if you know how to cook it properly).
There're 2 major problems with vanilla Debian.
a) Debian Wheezy (current stable) has an old libc (don't remember which version exactly). So you have to either 1) install a newer libc (>=2.17 as far as I know) from backports or elsewhere, or 2) to move to Debian Jessie (current testing), which seems to have a proper libc.
b) There're no proprietary Nvidia and ATI drivers in Debian's packages, even in non-free section. Opensourced Nvidia's nouveau driver isn't that good for 3D games, about opensourced ATI's driver I don't know. So you either 1) have to find a repo with a suitable deb package of proprietary driver, or 2) have to install the driver directly from tarball. I don't know about ATI agan, but for Nvidia you have to download a suitable installer script from Nvidia's website and then run it (see Nvidia's FAQ for details). It's not a "true Debian way", but you'll have a working driver as a result.
