Want to know what's common between you two? Catalyst. The open source drivers give better performance for your hardware. You'll want to remove Catalyst and add the Oibaf PPA for the latest open source drivers.

Happening to NVIDIA too.

That would be something new to me! Any source you could link to?

Any news on the issue?

My hardware is vintage but I can play Portal 1 comfortably. I used to play TF2 as well.

Here it segfaults:
/run/media/namename/HIT_160/Steam_lxde/SteamApps/common/Team Fortress 2/hl2.sh: line 67: 3889 Segmentation fault (core dumped) ${GAME_DEBUGGER} "${GAMEROOT}"/${GAMEEXE} "$@"
You might run TF2 with GDB to find out what exactly segfaults (it might not help much, though). I play TF2 and didn't notice any issues with Options or sound, it doesn't look like the game's bug to me.
rim6o 21 dec, 2013 @ 4:04
Today I updated my system. The update included SDL... IDK whether it's related, or not. TF2 crashes when I hit the 'Options' button only sometimes. Since yesterday usually not the first time I try.
loudaslife 22 dec, 2013 @ 11:21
I just did a fresh install of TF2 today and I get the exact same crash. I click "Options" and the game will instantly exit to desktop every time. I'm on Intel intregrated graphics, running what is basically a stripped down version of Xubuntu 13.10. I use no proprietary drivers at all. I hope valve can fix this bug.

Sounds silly, but it hapens rarely if I... avoid action/look at a plain wall before clicking the button :)

Also, once it crashes I have to restart my entire system. Otherwise menus will lag like hell.
sniffy194 22 dec, 2013 @ 14:35
It's happening to me as well,

I'm using Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS and using the LXDE Theme with only open-source drivers
Toquita 27 dec, 2013 @ 6:10
Has anyone solved this?
Toquita 29 dec, 2013 @ 17:46
It doesn't happen on Debian Wheezy. It must be either the Kernel or the Nvidia drivers.
On the bright side since my PC is really old clicking the options button is quicker than the quit button

I think it may be because of the ATI Driver. i recently tried to upgrade my graphics card to one similar to yours and the driver was ATI. about when i installed the drivers is when this problem started so idk if this discussion was already ended but this my help.
