What is linux to you..

Now that we have steam os and steam in general honestly whats linux to you?

I know some people like it because it brings the power user back to the os and you feel like your actually using a pc and not just a cute toy.

I know some people like it to play windows games on it though wine why on earth but to each there own i know some like it for stability and security...

So i ask why do you use linux what about it makes your life easier or peace of mind?


Me personally i started using it back in the day (you used to be able to buy mandrake in store started with that.) The reason i made the switch is i felt windows for me was going in the wrong direction.. Not from a application surplus standpoint but it used to be more an addition to dos then a whole os.. Then we had windows 95 which was a decent os but it seems the further and futher that ms refined it the dumber downed it became... I feel like using windows took away the ability to use the pc the way i wanted to use it and tried to make me feel like all i should do is hit the power button..

Thats why i switched i like to use the pc configure it the way i want write applications play some games listen to alot of music and watch movies... I dont like to feel like the os im using is made for or treats me like i dont know how to use a computer Linux allows me that freedom..

I use it because i trust it. I don't mind so much that games are closed software, since i don't consider games to be critical freedom wise, but my OS must be GPL. I could never use a proprietary OS again.

Linux is a way of life for me. It's responsible for my job which I've learned just because the OS is so much more interesting than any other for me. Administrating Linux systems and developing software is also still a private hobby for me.

Both. Linux distros are easier to maintain, Arch gives me full control over my system, it's not bloated and doesn't contain Spywares and Keyloggers by default. It has security, it's fast, free, customizable.

My 1st PC was a 16 MB RAM; 1GB HD; 133 MHz Processor; and it had Windows 95. This was back in 2006, I know it was a piece of crap for the time but I liked it. Then My dad bought a new PC and it came with Linux....... oooohhh, the beauty! It was DIFFERENT, it was STABLE and had everything by default, unlike Windows XP which I had to download everything I wanted. The distro was a Debian based called Insigne Linux, sponsored by the Government to make computers used by everyone. It was version 4.0, and I swear to Zeus I will pay 50 $ to someone who can bring me that distro back. Even more.

I love that distro and I want it back.

Privacy : No "NSA Inside [TM}" AFAIK.
Performance : Compared to our sole remaining Mac Fedora 20 is very fast.
Security : Curated repo's + common sense on the web means much less worry about malware.
Economy : If you're on a tight budget Linux makes your dollar go a lot further.
Freedon : Not locked into walled garden. Things that I can't do on proprietary OS's I can do on Linux.

To me Linux is whatever a user wants it to be; Linux could be your own OS or some other OS on top of the Linux kernel. I can do all the things I could have on Windows under Linux now, and the nice thing is I am aware what peripherals are actually being used, and which services are running. Windows does list which services a user uses, but it's counter-intuitive. I can also try out different Linux distros and have fun tweaking them! :D Have tried Debian, Fedora, Arch Linux, openSUSE and all of them have advantages and disadvantages. Linux be Linux in the end tho.

Well said, I agree wholeheartedly. I TRY to like proprietary OS's - everytime I buy a laptop I will sit there for a few days and endure Windows until I can't stand it any more. For me its a feely thing. Maybe im a complete control freak because when windows gives me a choice between restarting my computer now or delaying for a while after installing updates and offering no choice of 'how about never'... stuff like that seriously Grinds My Gears(tm) and I just don't feel good with such computing shackles.

With linux based O.S's all the pain is front loaded and after a lot of tweaking my computer experience feels unsuppassable and more importantly, my own.

Linux to me is like cooking a three course meal - prep and cooking are hard work but when you are eating it next to someone eating their 'Proprietary OS Microwave Meal' you know you are enjoying it way better than they.

Linux is the maximum personalization. Windows doesn't have such variety of software and the possibility to configure your operating system.

I lay somewhere between Junior s2 Camila and Raven MCCCXXXVII in terms of what Linux means to me. As for how I got started? I was, quite simply, curious. Ended up wiping the hard drive by accident, so it was either Linux or bust for my dull, slow DELL Inspiron.

To me it is a frontier where I can move forward with economic freedom. Let me explain that statement a little bit. The reason I call it a frontier is that overall Linux has not reached the same level of functionality and user friendliness for the general populous that Windows and Mac OS has, though it has come a very long way to where distros like Ubuntu can now offer functionality and ease of use to many home users. Linux offers economic freedom in moving forward because unlike with Windows which charges it's users for each new milestone version, IE XP, Vista, 7, 8 and on... , Linux does not. Like the OS it's self all updates are free.

its funny you mention the p166 cause that was really my main stream pc for the longest time with a s3 video card i remmber back in that day i walked litterly to the town ajacent to me and got a dvd drive and the mpeg2 decoder board along with a voodoo 1 board which i still own with its origional box directions and passthough card.. I remember trying to set it up on windows and it would cause windows to crash i tried for a few days and almost gave up even with windows 95 i didnt feel like i could do much with it then point click install drivers update and hope it worked it felt to dumb for me so thats when i picked up at eb games lol mandrake and a few linux games they actually had quake and a few other games on cd at the time if anyone remembers loki games.. I poped the linux disk in followed directions and was presented with a shinny 3d desktop if anyone remembers back in those days the default display manger in mandrake did 3d moveing wallpaper like rain splashing on water which was omg amazing cause i never seen it... My voodoo board actally worked under mandrake (i dont remember i dont think vodoo had a linux driver but open gl picked it up).. I remember the first time i played quake 2 under linux was like holy hell it just felt and looked so nice... I really got into rocket arena....

After that I used it for years before i lost that pc then my next one had windows vista on it tried to tuff that out for awhile didnt go so well after a few years i went back at this time i was going to school for my assiocates and eventually my ba in computer science and did micosoft certification.

The funny part i guess in a sense linux represented freedom and useablity from the microsoft world. I have always had less issues with linux then any ms product.... I got into it at a young age and used it when i was a kid it was only when i was a young adult in school did i have to use the windows side of it...

I really appreate all your guys thoughts and comments on the subject i really do....

I just sharieng a little bit about my life with u all i guess.

Linux is some interesting thing for me, it's nice tinkering with it sometimes but it's still very far from being able to replace my windows system. Maybe in a few years if Valve manages to bring more people.

Why can't Linux replace Windows?

Lack of software/games support from other companies?
Bad hardware support?
